SAF riled the Liverpool fans for saying that Gerrard was not a top top player. Has Rodgers implicitly agreed with the great man by saying that Gerrard would be more suited to a central defender's role "later" ? Gerrard is good but is not the top bracket of great midfield players.
The innate tendency to go for a Hollywood pass every third touch will mean he'll be a poor man's Gary Cahill. Gerrard is a very good player, but if you observe him closely, you can see how clumsy he looks on the ball at times. The fact that he is not a natural could be the reason why he cannot be considered great. Or maybe the game has evolved but Gerrard stayed still.
Spoken like true mancs What is funny is all this hollywood pass nonsense and is totally indicative of why English footballers are ruined. When players try to do the difficult things and it doesn't come off they get stick for it. There never seems to be a mention of how many "Hollywood" passes Gerrard completes funnily enough. Gerrard was never the best midfielder in the world, just like Scholes was never the best midfielder in the world, Stevie is a top player as was Paul. Both made plenty of errors that's for sure. Scholes was also prone to making difficult passes that failed to find the mark, it's what happens when you have the bottle to try the difficult things and and when it doesn't go right, having the bottle to try again, I commend that not complain about it.
No chance. He only shines because he played and plays in a mediocre midfield. He carried the whole scousers team for ten years. Not because he is that good but because they are that mediocre.
Says the fan formerly known as Macheda's worshiper Where is he now again remind me? I think it is time for Moyes to sign a Portuguese homeless person for millions
May explain why against a good team with a good midfield the scousers are absolutely nowhere. They have yet to beat any team in the top 6 or 7. (they beat a very poor United that were in 10th - 12th at the time). His legs are now gone and he is reduced to imitate Paul Scholes and he does it very badly.
Gerrards main attribute was his dynamism and power. These attributes seem to diminish with age and sadly Gerrard cannot play any other way. He is no Xabi Alonso nor Xavi, Paul Scholes, Redondo etc in that he can sit back in midfield and control play.
I wouldn't exactly call a Gerrard, Mascherano and Alonso midfield mediocre. Those three were/ are better than every central midfielder Utd have bought since Keano in the early 90s
Since Keane, our midfield has been the worst in the premiership. Even Gerrard the donkey would have had a place. That is why we have won many titles since.
Very true. But equally true that he would not have displaced Scholes or Keane in CM for any of the ten years before that (had he been playing back then of course!). SAF didn't say he wasn't a very good player. All he said was he rated Scholes higher, and didn't think Gerrard was one of the very best to have every played in the game. It's pretty much the same chat that happens in every pub throughout the land, and his is an opinion backed up by thousands of fans and the fact Gerrard was behind Keane, Scholes and Vieira in the PL's greatest players list. Yet when SAF says it every bugger and his dog jumps. Further proof that even in retirement he has everyone dancing to his tune
