It's a Wal Mart thing. Wasn't someone trampled to death in a Wal Mart in the States at a similar uber discount day? Tho' given the size of the average American it wouldn't take too many of them to reach crush depth.

Besides which, most of the deals on stuff you would want (the latest stuff that has £30-50 off rather than the 70% off products which are completely out of date and they just want to get rid off before Xmas shopping really starts) are online. That's the wife's Xmas present sorted:

It doesn't work like that in the US!. Christmas is not the big shopping event that it is here. The average Yank thinks that we are crazy buying quality presents when the prices are seasonally high. They have always made their major purchases after Thanksgiving. It's such a tradition that even though the volumes are done on-line the stores are full - both to see the parades and give them something to do!

Having said that we can well do without yet another piece of reatil Americanna - save it for January

Yes it does! The Xmas season in the US is when almost 25% of domestic US spending traditionally occurs! The only reason Black Friday is so huge is not because it's after Thanksgiving, but because it's the start of the Xmas shopping season (that and 'Cyber Monday').

The only reason the average Yank thinks we're crazy buying when the price is high is because the UK doesn't (yet) have the same tradition of aggressive discounting, largely cos we don't have the ridiculous amount of retail space they have in America. The US has twice as much retail space per person as the UK, so stores have to be aggressive in selling to get the customers in. It's no coincidence that Wal Mart has only now chosen to introduce Black Friday to the UK, with the retail environment so poor and shoppers so responsive to perceived 'bargains'.

Completely agree about not needing it in the UK tho' - apparently there's been four deaths in the US on Black Friday in the past five years from stampedes and even shootings! <yikes>
