With a list of famous people connected to the arts having connections to Watford growing longer all the time, I thought we needed a place to leave our literary offerings.

We will be following such musical giants as Ginger Spice, Simon Le Bon, The Gallows, Henry Wood, LTJ Bukem and the piano player who helped the club a few years ago, actors Michael Bentine and Terry Scott and Ísland's favourite banker Nick Leeson, not really in the arts but I think he has a good story to tell.

To start the thread moving I have murdered some of Bernie Taupin and Elton John's work. In the road of Tiny Dance for you I have

    Tubby Chancer

Stanmore baby, worthless maybe, a conman in this land
Empty eyed, pirate smile, you'll ruin a football club
Red hat, you must have seen him dancing in the sand
And now he's in there, always with us, tubby chancer ready to blub

Watford freaks out in the street
Handing tickets out for the match
    Turning back he just laughs
The prison cell’s not that bad

Worthless man he makes his stand
    In the court room
Looking on he sings a song
The lies he knows is the tune he hums

From Lord Ashcroft it was such a steal
Lying here when no one hears
Only you and you can hear
    We don’t believe you anymore

We’ll keep you close. You tubby chancer
Count the safe keys on the office
Put you away behind bars of iron
You had a busy day today

We’ll keep you close. You tubby chancer
Count the safe keys on the office
Put you away behind bars of iron
You had a busy day today

Stanmore baby, worthless maybe, a conman in this land
Empty eyed, pirate smile, you'll ruin a football club
Red hat, you must have seen him dancing in the sand
And now he's in there, always with us, tubby chancer ready to blub

    Salad brothers want a feel
    Planning here without a fear
Only you and you should fear them
When I say they’ll get you

We’ll keep you close. You tubby chancer
Count the safe keys on the office
Put you away behind bars of iron
You had a busy day today

We’ll keep you close. You tubby chancer
Count the safe keys on the office
Put you away behind bars of iron
You had a busy day today

    An Italian youngster named Zola
Looked likely to be a fast bowler
    But later in life
    Spurred on by his wife
    He mastered an old pianola

From there he progressed to play cornets
But working from dusk until dawn it's
Sure to come as a shocker
So the lad took up soccer
And ended up managing the Hornets

By far one of my favourite artists. Logical Progression and the progression sessions. Wow.

Round about the early 1960s Jimmy Perry and his wife Gilda used to run the Palace theatre. Used to love an evening there after an afternoon at the Vic. Jimmy went on to write TV programs like Dad's Army, and a number of the actors who had been in the rep company appeared in the TV series.

The writing took me days and I saw our former owner called tubby chancer in a WOb and the sounds fitted.

Ak, I wish you hadn't mentioned Nick Leeson as he went to the same school as Steven Finn, Jordan Parkes and I did. Thankfully he's old enough that his last year there was my first so I didn't know him. When you work in the Finance industry somewhere like Jersey where it is the primary source of the income to the island, you tend to keep quiet about things like that. Must admit I did like the choice of actress to play his first wife in the film about what he did (probably with the knowledge of his bosses) to Barings Bank.
