It will be the 184th meeting between the two clubs who were the "glamour teams" of the 1960s. Spurs come into the match in 9th place on 20 points with United in 6th place on 21 points. Tottenham Hotspur's first meeting with Manchester United came in the old 1st round (today's 3rd round) of the FA Cup in January 1899 when United were known as Newton Heath. The match was drawn 1-1 at Northumberland Park, but Spurs won the replay 5-3 at Bank Street in Clayton, Manchester. A decade later the two clubs met for the first time in a Football League match with United drawing 2-2 at White Hart Lane in the First Division. The reverse fixture at Old Trafford was easilly won by United 5-0. Tottenham's first League win over United came in November 1911 2-1 at Old Trafford. Both clubs met for four seasons in the Second Division during the 1930s. Since the start of football after WW2, all League meetings have taken place in the Top Flight of the English League system. In 1952, both clubs toured North America and played two exhibition matches with Spurs winning 5-0 in Toronto, Canada and 7-1 in New York, USA. The clubs were drawn together in the 1963-64 European Cup Winners' Cup with Spurs winning 2-0 at the Lane and United winning 4-1 at Old Trafford. Old Trafford was the venue for the 1967 FA Charity Shield with League Champions United and FA Cup Winners Spurs drawing 3-3 in a game most remembered for goalkeeper Pat Jennings' long-range goal. The Charity Shield was shared. August 1979 saw the clubs meet for the first time in the Football League Cup and Glenn Hoddle's magnificent volly was the winning goal in a 2-1 Spurs victory at White Hart Lane. United went on to win the second leg at Old Trafford 3-1. In June 1983, the clubs played two matches in Swaziland, Southern Africa, resulting in a win each. Prior to this season, Spurs last win at Old Trafford came in December 1989 thanks to a Gary Lineker goal. The clubs have only ever met in one Domestic Cup Final - the 2009 Football League (Carling) Cup Final at Wembley, which ended in a 0-0 draw after extra time. United won the subsequent penalty shoot-out. Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur were founder members of the Premier League in 1992-93 and are two of the seven clubs who have been ever-present up to the 2013-14 season - Arsenal, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Everton and Liverpool being the other five. The fixtures during season 2010-11 saw United win 2-0 at Old Trafford in October while the reverse match at White Hart Lane ended in a 0-0 draw. 2010-11 was the first season when both Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur competed together in the UEFA Champions League. Both clubs won their respective Group Stages and progressed to the Knock-Out Phase. Spurs eventually went out to Real Madrid in the Quarter Finals while Manchester United made it to the Final, only to lose to Barcelona. The away fixture at Old Trafford last season in August resulted in a 3-0 win for United with goals from Danny Welbeck, who headed in Tom Cleverley's cross just after 60 minutes and he then produced a wonderful instinctive flick to set up a second for Anderson. Wayne Rooney scored with a pinpoint late header from Ryan Giggs's centre. The game at White Hart Lane in March 2012 was won by United 3-1. Wayne Rooney scored on the stroke of half-time to put the visitors ahead at the break. Further goals were added with a brace from Ashely Young before Jermain Defoe got one back for Spurs with three minutes remaining. Last season's fixture at Old Trafford resulted in an historic 3-2 win for Tottenham - their first in the League at Old Trafford in 23 years. Jan Vertonghen's second minute strike was deflected-in off Jonny Evans and Gareth Bale added a second goal after 32 minutes. United hit back through Luis Nani after 51 minutes but Spurs restored their two goal cushion a minute later with a Clint Dempsey goal. Shinji Kagawa scored United's second goal a minute later and Spurs survived the pressure for a United equaliser to come away with three very well earned points. Former Manchester United defender Zeki Fryers joined Spurs in January 2013 from Standard Liege in Belgium. The match at White Hart Lane in January 2013 resulted in a 1-1 draw. Robin van Persie put United ahead on 25 minutes but an injury-time goal from Clint Dempsey meant the points were shared. United went on to win the Premier League Title and Sir Alex Ferguson resigned at the end of the season. Overall, United have a very good record over Spurs with 86 wins to 50 with 47 of the 183 matches played so far drawn. please log in to view this image Tottenham Hotspur v Manchester United Complete Match Records 1899 to 2013 please log in to view this image They Played for Spurs & United.... Gylfi looks likelier both to set one up and to get one for us than anyone...unless we can somehow sign Causevic from Tromso, anyway. Walker, Chiriches, Dawson, Vertonghen Sandro, Dembele Gylfi, Holtby, Lennon Adebayor (Soldado looks hopeless ATM. Just our luck we'd miss a pen w/o him. Tempting to start Chiriches. It would be nice to have someone who gets in good positions for crosses and can play deeper if he's not getting service.)
I really don't know what team I'd put out this weekend. It seems we don't have a single player in form, barring perhaps Chiriches. Even Vertonghen and Sandro have had their nightmare moments recently. Think I largely agree with Rwaeb's team, except perhaps Adebayor, whether there's an alternative I'm not sure.
I don't think it matters who steps out onto the pitch on Sunday; there's about a 95% chance the performance will be dog ****. Chiriches has to start and I'd be tempted to throw lamela in at the deep end again. Sooner or later his footwork is going to cause massive problems for a defence. But he needs to be playing or he's never going to get any momentum. It's too stop/start for him at the moment.
I agree with Roo , any team shackled in AVB nightmare book of rigid suffocation will be 95% unwatch able , whoever we play from the start. The "Project" or the dream of the "next level" looks more likely coming from a nut house in outer space. Chin up Sid
While Spurs were the most successful club during the 1960s, Everton actually amassed more Division One points than Manchester United... Combined Football League Division One Table for the 1960s
It was obvious to me at the time our summer spending was bordering on ridiculous, far too many risky signings and players handed to a restrictive and uninspiring manager, so we enter this game as an utter shambles in attack. However such as football is, these games are set up for someone to go out and make a name for themselves, that's all we can hope for, Lamela to pull out a performance and while it's unlikely, Man Utd have problems themselves, with Evra admitting he expects teams to score against them. Soldado, Chadli, over 30 million wasted. Capoue good player but isn't needed. By the end of the year it will become even more apparent we have thrown away a good chunk of Bales transfer fee and we can add them to the list of flops such as Bentley, Bent, Postiga, Rebrov, Richards, Palacios, just a long list of high money purchases gone wrong. Although out there is the next Bale, the next Berba, we always find these players, Eriksen and Lamela are the next hopes but if they fail then that's nearly 100 million pissed up the wall but it's not all bad, we still have Sandro! The Spurs Utd games are always entertaining, so aside from the Avb inspired doom and gloom, I'll be hopeful of at least a show of passion and drive which will probably come from players like Lennon who apparently isn't top four quality but helped us finish top four twice. The logic of Avb is baffling at times but that's matched by Avb fans, although there seems to be fewer of them by the day, but this game is AVB's chance to win some support back. Even if it's for a week until we're useless, again.
Just had a BTSport flyer in amongst my post and it says we play United on the 1st of Dec, then again in the PL return on 1st of Jan...8 other games separate these two fixtures! 10 games in 31 days! Neither United game is on Sky. This is the first of 3 PL games in 7 days with a midweek programme coming up, 9 points on offer for all teams is going to see a different table in just over weeks time I'd say! with the Xmas schedule not far away, its a very important time, and not a good one to be going into with team issues!
Anyone else going to the game? My friend booked the tickets and said that there were no seats in the South Lower because United fans have taken it, is that true? Surely that'd be moving a load of ST holders and giving United more seats than usual. Anyway, not looking forward to the game for once. Think I'd rather stay in bed and sleep through it to find out the score at the end.
Signing 7 players with the Bale money was anything but risky. The more you spread the money around the more likely that some of them will turn out well. Signing two £50m players would have been much more risky - they could both be turkeys. If you watched a brain surgeon do an operation you'd probably be baffled by some of the steps. I doubt you'd come on here and criticise the guy though because you'd rightly think that he knew more about it than you. I wouldn't actually describe myself as a fan of AVB but I have tried to understand what he is trying to do and to explain it on here as best I can. However, I am a fan of Spurs and will support all our players and managers while they are at the club.
Utd have had the most of lower Park Lane for a number of seasons now, it's a joke. I've had to get upper - as usual when it comes to facing them - really pisses me off. Not because of the view and the fact I'm moved from my regular area in block 35 but because I hate walking up the ****ing stairs! They usually have it from the corner up to Block 34.
Rose still out with that toe injury, wtf has he done to it to be out so long,Ade and Eriksen out as well
Power I don't expect you to reply any different and in many ways I respect the fact you're loyal to Avb and fight his corner. Alot of fans who tried to convince themselves Avb was much better then Redknapp have already turned on Avb so at least you can say you have stuck with your views. But yes the signings where risky, Soldado, Chadli, Capoue, that's nearly 41 million on three players we either don't need, are crap or aren't suited to our league. . I can understand the risk taken on Lamela or Eriksen and possibly Paulinho but apart from Eriksen the fees where too high. The fee paid for Lamela will add to his problems settling as he doesn't just have to settle, he has to justify such a big price tag and overall we have gone about wrongly spending the Bale money, especially if Avb stays as manager. We signed Soldado, Paulinho, Capoue, Eriksen, Lamela, Chadli, Vlad, 7 foreign players who all need to be integrated into a team, and these players aren't cheap so there's a high possibility only 2 or 3 will be great buys and the ones that fail will likely lose the manager his job.
Not the best analogy, apart from football being infinetly less complicated, a brain operation wouldn't be watched and discussed by non medical people without a clue as you seem to be suggesting everyone here is. To keep within your reasoning it'd be discussed by other doctors and medics. Likewise on here amongst your regular fan there are current and ex players, who knows, qualified coaches, you just don't know. The fact you have 'tried to understand and explain as best you can' says it all really. I know exactly what he's been trying to do, introduce a Barcelona style of play, I just don't know why he's doing it with this particular group of players who are clearly extremely uncomfortable with it, and proves you can't just take any ol' player and turn him into what you want.
Please forgive me , just a bit of fun meant with no venom. By any chance is powerspurs real name Uriah Heep.
If Avb was in the medical field, he would use specialist equipment intended for other purposes, to prode, poke and insert in places it simply doesn't fit! When Avb is sacked, he will only have himself to blame for not just speaking up regarding the arrivals and seeing they aren't right for his vision, but then deciding to force them to play a way which they aren't comfortable with!
Honestly had trouble trying to pick a team for this. So many under performers that if we weren't desperate for a win, I'd play a youth team to punish the 1st teamers for poor form. Suppose I'll go with: Lloris, Walker, Kaboul, Chiriches, Vertonghen Sandro, Holtby Lamela, Sigurdsson, Townsend Soldado Paulinho and Dembele haven't impressed at CM enough for me and while I'm not Holtby's greatest fan, it'd be interesting to see him in CM along side Sandro, where he can dictate the play from further back. Gylfi looks like the only midfielder capable of scoring so I think we could do with him. Soldado just gets the nod ahead of the other two but another goal-shy display (even if not entirely his fault) and then he gets dropped.
