A lot better than some gave him credit for, (you yourself included I would think). They often show DVD's of some of the games he played in while we're on the way to the away games and he scored and made some great goals. Not frightened to put his head anywhere to get the ball.

Think we saw his importance after he left when we finished 14th and seemed to struggle in midfield. Key part of the Robson days.

Oh for sure fella, i've had to suffer you lot having many top notch players, and although he never stood out for myself considering what you have had, it seems many of you have very high opinions of him, so maybe it was just my SAFC specks.

Always thought of him as a canny player.

Still hard to understand just what went wrong, guess we'll never know. A loss to the game, and i mean that.

I think a lot of people had more respect for him than even they realised.

I always thought I though that he was simply a fine player. I was more affected by the news of his death, though, than I would have thought I could be by the death of someone I'd never met. There was a real sense of loss to, I don't know, something I belong to or was part of.

He must have occupied a much bigger role in my view of the world than I realised. I think a few people felt that way.

Not the greatest of clips, and nowhere like the DVD's they show on the coach to the away games, but a little something about Speedo.

The word legend gets banded around to much however that word and Gary speed goes hand in hand as it does with sir bobby.
Top man gave his all and all of his clubs think of him as "their" team was his team.

I still regard Gary Speed to be one of the Premier League's best ever, he's up there with the likes of Ryan Giggs for me.

I felt that way when he retired and it has nowt to do with his untimely death – not just a top player but a top professional, by all accounts on and off the pitch.

    RIP indeed...

Same for me. When I heard it on sky sports news I just sat in silence and felt numb. So sad that he didn't cry out for help. Such a fantastic professional

A legend here, a legend at Leeds, a legend at Bolton, a legend for Wales - anywhere he went he left his mark. A truly great player, manager and person.

Which was very evident and nice to see during our League Cup match against them in September.

Only a certain type of person can bring fans from different teams together.
Speedo was one of those people.

I'll be honest here. I really never thought he was a great player. That said, I was never in the know-how when I was younger (about 12-18) when he was around. Yet, I still kinda feel that some of us overrate him.

    RIP Speed

    Great player? Probably not.

A very good one? Most definitely. It wasn't so much his ability on the ball etc. Just that he had an engine on him that allowed him to run box to box all game. Everything he did was above average without being superb at any one part of the game (maybe his heading). He could tackle, pass, worked his nuts off, he was vocal, very good in both boxes and scored 7-12 goals a season.

He's the sort of player needed to win a league title IMO. Consistently gave 7/8 out of 10 performances. Certainly never dropped lower than a 6 but also rarely hit a 9 or 10.

Utter legend on the pitch and on the sidelines.

The work he did for the Welsh National team, through his playing and managing was simply faultless. And his general ability on the pitch for every club he played for stood out, not many like him. That's for sure. <ok>

Exactly he did Dyer's donkey work for him, could say the same of Jenas. Dyer never really did it after Speed left.
