I still like the idea someone brought up about changing the backroom staff, Phelan would be a good appointment imo. I don't want Hughton to go and I sincerely hope things get better, but with the results not going our way I can understand why if or when he does go.
You mischief you! [Edit] Nothing to do with stats; everything to do with Fulham 6 Norwich 0, which consigned us to the Championship and made it possible for WBA, who were in 20th place when the final round of games kicked off, to survive.
I'm a little surprised that Peter Grant hasn't been mentioned in all of this. I liked Phelan a lot as a City player but as manager would be a considerable risk. One of the difficulties is that once you go down the new manager route that option has been effectively lost, unless we want to go down the route of changing managers on a regular basis in the hope that one will work. I'm still inclined to see how things go until mid-season and make a change, if appropriate, before the January window.
I thought there was a lot of evidence in CH being a crucial factor in both the RvW and Fer signings as well. What weight would someone like Phelan carry in this regard?
If Mike Phelan had never played for would anyone seriously be suggesting him? Being a former player (20+ years ago) is no qualification to be our manager, I personally thinks its a pretty ridiculous suggestion
I don't think anyone's suggesting him based purely on him being an ex-player (nobody's calling for Hucks!), but because he's also got to be one of the most experienced coaches around, who worked very closely with one of the best managers of all time, and if he's to be believed frequently played a major role in the management of one of the biggest clubs in the world. No, it doesn't mean he'd be a great manager, there's no guarantee of that at all, but of the names being bandied around, there's at least a lot of logic in choosing him. Whether he'd be better than Hughton or not is another question.
I think Phelan could be a good manager, but this would be a rather scary time to take a chance on the unknown, IMO.
Fair points, and "ridiculous" was probably over cooking it a bit on my part, but I'm with others in thinking it would be too much of a risk with no guarantee he'd be any better. And I do think the late 80's connection is playing a part in some people's thinking. And as Surgeryman says, we've already got a manager.
The article seems too desperate to me. If he was so good Fergie would be speaking out for him... Just playing a bit of devils advocate, but elements of what he says makes it seem like an advertisement for a job offer.
Oh its entirely a public offering of a CV, but its hard to argue that the guy isn't a top coach, he won pretty much everything as head coach
