Where the players play is also a big factor imo. What's to say someone such as Beckenbauer can't be considered the greatest? Or Yashin?
I reckon many would consider Beckenbauer the greatest. I've never heard of Yashin? Who did he play for?
Maybe, but when the argument is brought up there is always a bias towards the more attacking players. He was a Soviet goalkeeper. Played for Dynamo Moscow his entire career. Only goalkeeper to win the Ballon D'Or, in 1963. Widely considered the greatest goalkeeper ever. He made over 150 penalty saves and kept over 270 clean sheets in his career, winning a Gold medal at the 1956 Olympic football tournament, and won the 1960 European Championships.
Taffarel for Brazil was a beast when it came to penalties. I cant remember him ever going the wrong way
Great point re Beckenbauer. Its unfortunate that the yardstick at times seems to be goals. For instance a keeper will never be the goat i.e casillas, but look at his cv! World Cups, Euro's, Champs league, la ligas the lot!
If the Barca scout had ever got himself to Boothferry Park to see Keith Edwards, world football would have a different complexion.
Played over 800 games to be fair from 1950-1970. God knows what went on behind the iron curtain in footballing terms. The national team was good though looking at their results in the 1960s and 1980s.
yes. and you can't say that jack charlton was greater than george best because he won more world cups. that doesn't work. you can't really compare completed careers with ones that are half done either. (not you, but people in general, like writers). anyway, lots of pele's goals came in friendlies and i have a book with his stats in but there are adding errors in it.
As a all round attacking footballer Ronaldo is another level to Messi. There's nothing Ronaldo can't do. I'm still waiting for someone to give me explation why Messi is better. All I get is 'Because he's Messi'.
