This afternoon sees United travel to the St. Andrews home of Birmingham City to play their first game in the newly-established U21 Premier League League Cup.

Teams from 52 Academies including 19 of the 22 that hold Category 1 status are participating and City reached the Last 32 thanks to a 3-2 win at Sheffield United.

Success for Newcastle would put them into the draw for the last 16, at which point the competition switches from regional to national level.

Kick-off is at 2pm and admission is £4 for adults and £2 for concessions. Please note that tickets must be bought in advance from the Kop ticket office, open from Noon.

The home side are advertising live coverage of the game via their YouTube channel online here

Hope the youngsters do well, but I can't see them getting too much support.

United's U21 side are in action against their Birmingham City counterparts in the newly-established U21 Premier League Cup at St. Andrews. Kick-off is at 2pm and the live coverage via youtube advertised by City didn't happen due to "a technical glitch".

seems like the cup trail is still on despite being beaten 2-1, very strange

    A tale of three cities!

A 1-2 defeat by Birmingham City appeared to have ended Newcastle's U21 Premier League Cup campaign at the first time of asking on Tuesday - but within 72 hours, the Magpies were back in the competition!

Birmingham's on-loan striker Aaron Mclean scored both goals to defeat United - but it subsequently transpired that the same player had played and scored for parent club Hull City in the previous round of the competition.

Following talks with the Premier League, Birmingham opted to withdraw and United were promptly reinstated into the last 16 - where they'll play Leicester City at home on a date yet to be confirmed.

U21 Premier League Cup revised Round of 16 draw:

    Burnley v Bolton Wanderers
    Cardiff City/Chelsea v Bristol City/West Ham
    Everton v Wolves
    Exeter City v Blackburn Rovers
    Newcastle United v Leicester City
    Fulham v Arsenal
Manchester City v West Bromwich Albion
    Reading v Watford
