So not only has he come out today saying he was the one actually managing Man Utd for the last few years, but his odds on becoming the next manager of Norwich have been cut to 7/2 having started the day at 12/1. Lots of money suddenly going on him then, anyone know why, and what would you think if it was him next?
my only thought is Steve Clarke hasn't done badly in his first no.1 role after being a no.2 at a big club previously
I wouldn't object to him. As another full back, I have a sneaky suspicion that he would set up his teams quite defensively (admittedly I have no evidence whatsoever, but for some reason I have in my head that he was responsible for much of the Man U defensive work). Given that Phelan was the one who "held Ferguson back" from some of his more maverick decisions, I think Phelan would be pretty conservative. I also don't think he will necessarily play "attractive" or "possession" football, given that he should stick to what he knows and Man U are, at heart, a counter-attacking team. If it provides a bit of fan unity and he offers some interesting scouting connections, I think he would be a decent shout though. Still riskier than someone who has top flight managerial experience though.
Brian Kidd, Shteve McClaren? Actually that's probably a bit harsh on McClaren, aside from the England debacle his club management record is pretty decent and I've got a sneaky suspicion he's going to get Derby promoted this season (remember where you heard it first )
Thought so, There isn't many number 2's make good managers (excuse the pun), Mike Phelan i have a hunch is the exception to the rule, I reckon he could turn out to be an excellent manager so would be a good capture for you guys.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-2513655/Mike-Phelan-claims-manager-Sir-Alex-Fergusons-years-Manchester-United.html heres a link to the article, i think the point he's trying to make is that he basically has been managing Man United at times and so shouldn't be seen as a massive risk. Its very much putting himself in the shop window.
Someone on twitter reckons he was seen meeting DM at th holiday inn recently! Make of that what you will!
I would say for every number 2 that has moved to be a manager you could double, even possibly treble that for ones that should have been good but turned out crap! was RDM ever a number 2? I thought he started out as manager with MK then WBA, might have a feeling he then went back to chelski as coach, but he had experience before as a manager. Steve Clarke is good, like i say there will always be exceptions to the rule.
No, and was a friend of a friend type of thing! But after some quick conversation we both agreed that him coming as either the manager or a number 2 would be good.
I saw it suggested the other day but a combo of Phelan as head coach and OGS as manager would be exciting
very good Bath and guru, yes there are risks in all of it really isn't there. will roy keane make a good no.2 after failing as a no.1?
