It looks a very good article and certainly gives something to think about.

My assessment is that Barton had his best season for us last year, which was a long time to wait for that level of performance. He may have been wastefull with the ball because our box ball winner was sold to Liverpool and not replaced - injuries (and Shola) took care of the other reasons why we didn't win much in the box after Carroll left.

The Premiership is a higher standard than the French league, so I'd think that Cabaya's passing will be more tested.

I disagree with what he says about not missing Barton but agree 100% with this...

"While it is dynamism and energy that Barton offers Newcastle, he is often wasteful with the ball and gifts possession to the opposition. Conversely, Cabaye’s capability to sit deeper and provide accurate passes to instigate attacking phases will make him an invaluable asset for Newcastle. Barton’s offensive intent often forces Nolan into a more withdrawn role (as was seen against Wolves), but installing Cabaye alongside the destructive Tioté in the heart of the midfield will unshackle the Newcastle captain, providing balance and composure in the centre of the pitch."

That pretty much sums things up for me, Carroll used to drop back hold the ball up brilliantly so Nolan had more space and time to get into a goalscoring position so I can see where the OP is coming from about having to "unshackle" Nolan.

Good read <ok>

In the event the Zog did not return. I want Barton to still be playing on the right so I dont see Cabaye as a problem for him.

Very good read disagree with some of the stuff said about joey b but its true that joey is very attack minded and this at times leads to wastefull passes and overhit balls which strikers cant reach. If we had betetr strikers who could run more and had better control joey would look far better. Cabaye seems similar to tiote but posses passes like joey b im wondering whe cabaye will play because he seems to occupy a position identicle to tiote. If tiote stay as our dm which i think he should we would have to push cabaye into a more attacking position which doesnt seem to suit him.

Suggests to me that Cayabe is more the replacement for Kevin Nolan than Joey Barton.

How? Granted Bartons been playing on the right, but passing, assists and not giving the ball away is exactly what an on form Joey Barton gives you in the middle. Nolan sits higher up and scores goals and couldn't really be described as 'industrious'.

Because Tiote is the DM and would replace Guthrie, Cayabe is in a central role meaning he'd take Nolan's place with Ben Arfa behind the new striker. This would mean at present a line up of

Tiote
Cayabe
Barton (RW)
Gutierrez (LW)
Ben Arfa (ACM)
Best (CF)

Much as I'm disgusted by calling Danny Guthrie a defensive midfielder, I see your point in that Nolan has been playing in the other central midfield spot. He's far from an orthodox centre mid though, and unless Tiotes at his usual best Nolan is an absolute liability there, and if we had a decent right winger I've no doubt Barton would've been playing in that position.

The article is talking in terms of the qualities Cabaye has which are similar (and better according to that article) to Bartons in the middle, and if we get a proper right winger he is a straight swap for Barton.

Anyone else just noticed how good our side would be if our midfield and front line looked like this

Tiote dm
Cabaye cm
Barton rm
Gutierez lm
Ben arfa am

Then with a quality lone striker. Ideally we coould do with another rm to cover barton preferablly one with pace. I think the fact weve signed cabaye and are also in the hunt for gervinho and boateng it shows we are planning on losing some midfielders this summer. And planning on having a starting eleven whcih will not include nolan or maybe even barton. Nolan has been playing as an attacking midfield and shadow striker with ben arfa back and us looking at gervinho nolan will stuggle to be first choice.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, Barton and/or Nolan won't be here come next season, that's for sure.

I really like what I've seen/heard from this Cabaye guy, though. Seems like a box-to-box, creative mdifielder, something we'll be crying out for if/when Barton leaves.

This.

I think Cabaye is a very good technical box-to-box midfielder who can pick a pass & help out in defense when required because of his energy & stamina levels. Similar to Barton in that respect to be honest, so he's a excellent buy by nufc, knowning the situation with Barton & his contract issues. Tiote is the defensive solidity in the middle, he can pick a pass aswell although is limited in the creativity department & is more of a natural ball-winning midfielder. Nolan is a goalscoring grafter sort of CM who can't really do much else apart from that. His stamina, lack of pace, lack of box-to-box ability & his technical ability are why he's such a limited CM, although a very good grafter & a very good finisher in the box!
