Joe Kinnear !, only joking. I went to see ken dodd at the Sunderland empire in may 1998 (I remember because SAFC were playing in the play-off final 2 days later) I was there for 4 hours, and he was excellent. Billy Connelly, Les dawson, Bill hicks, Jo brand, Richard prior, Don rickles( watch him on youtube the Frank sinatra roast) , hilarious. Bob hope, Foster brooks. Eric Morecambe was probably the best though.
When I lived down south in Bracknell in the 80s, we used to go to a comedy club there, and Mark Lamarr was the regular compare. This was long before he ever made it on TV. He was very often far funnier than all the comics. Like someone mentioned about Monkhouse earlier, it was how sharp he was that was impressive, he wasn't just performing an act, he'd just talk to the audience and find some humour off the cuff. His put downs to any hecklers were particularly brilliant. Again, back in the 80s, I'd seen Punt and Dennis on TV, and I'd have put them in the same category as Hale & Pace (i.e. ****e). However the wife and I ended up going into one of their shows actually just to get out of the rain. They were hilarious live, and these days Hugh Dennis cracks me up on Mock The Week. Actually, virtually anyone that appears on Mock The Week cracks me up.
I had a similar experience with Sandi Toksvig! I was working security at a private club in London and she was due to come on, I wasn't looking forward to it ........ I'd seen her on things like 'Call my Bluff' and thought she was a nasty little Danish dyke. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen and she annihilated any of the drunken bankers who dared to interrupt or heckle. She had them eating out of her hands by the end and they gave her a standing ovation.
saw billy connely at the glasgow rangers social club in the seventies , tbh every body was the same in there ,very funny nation imo
I've seen both Chubby and Bernard Manning but by far the best of the oldies I've watched is Ken Dodd. He was 82 at the time and had the audience in the palm of his hand for three hours. Go see him if you can before death comes along.....not his, yours. He'll outlive the lot of us.
I used to like a couple of local comedians called the Barton Brothers who used to do the rounds of the North East clubs...Mind you dared not go for a piss while they were on stage because they would have you..
“I didn’t come here for the culture or the climate, but I want to adapt. I have discovered Newcastle Brown Ale and my ambition is to speak Geordie as well as Peter Beardsley”- Alberts Chip Shop. plakka mag, turncoat and all-round sanctimonious neg-repping prick.
Russell Brand (I know he's an acquired taste) Frankie Boyle Ricky Gervais (An atheists dream stand up) I saw Kevin Bridges at Sunderland uni bar long before he made it. He was a teenager wearing his dads too big shirt and he was streets ahead of the other comedians that night. Tortured a lad who tried to heckle him. Mickey Flanagans "can I come in your house" joke is one of my favourites.
