Martin Allen would be a very good appointment, always liked him and did a great job at Gillingham last season and was harshly treated this season.

Aye, he was in the REME, then he was 'bought out' of his army contract. If you look at his Wiki it shows his first professional club as non-league Yeovil Town in 1988 and various posts saying it was Portsmouth who actually bought him out, but I have a recollection that that is not strictly accurate. I left the UK in September 1985 and recall him returning to see the lads at a Corp football tournament; he was already out and I believe he was at Brentford, having been funded by Arsenal., so there was a period when he was considered a mature apprentice! I certainly recall him struggling with making the transition from army football fitness to professional footballer fitness, as it surprised us; as for his first league goal, I don't know, as I was otherwise engaged.
