Not that it's a problem, I'm just curious.

When you look at a thread, you can see how many people are viewing it. If you're logged in, it shows the user name, if not, you get lumped as guest.

I've noticed a few user names that read a lot, but don't ever seem to post, and the busier threads have lots of guests.

Again, it's a free country, and the web's even more free, I'm just curious as to why some register and don't talk and others don't even register.

I met a guy at the Blackburn away game last season, and he asked me if I was John Firth when we got talking. I said yes what is your name on there and he said Oh I don't post I'm just a nosey ****er :)
So maybe they are all just nosey ****ers ha ha ha

I used to post a fair bit when I first joined, but as with many forums, a lot of threads just turn in to personal attacks and slanging matches and that just isn't for me.
It is still a useful site for City info but I just can't be bothered with the juvenile politics of it all.

I've wondered the same thing. I'm sure there's enough morons (probably me included) to put people off contributing, but in all honesty I can't understand people who are so passive that they just sit and read without wanting to say anything.
I sometimes think of the silent lurkers as being like Stepford Wives without the passion to take part.

What a load of bollocks. (that's a joke btw). <laugh>

I think you've more than a point there. It's easy for messages to be misunderstood and spin out of control, there are also some that thrive on long distance confrontation, which can put people off.

It's interesting how when people sometimes choose to post in the middle of a dispute to say that they never post and just read, but the argument is ruining their pleasure. I guess it's passive and active types.

I think that'll be the bulk to be fair. A passing interest in the gossip, but not enough to take part. To each their own.

A danger with not asking for clarification is, people can get the wrong idea of opinions, either by accident or design.

I know some people who look in on here and will use on quote to define what "City fans are saying". Fans of other clubs do that too.

I'm a bit similar, although I do post a bit, a lot of the time I just cringe at some of the pathetic name calling and pointless one-up-manship that goes on. I thought we were all supposed to be on the same side and although I appreciate we're not all going to agree on everything, some of the stuff that goes on is absolutely ridiculous.

Whatever happened to a bit of friendly banter and some genuine discussion about football?

Valid points and questions. The board is run for the benefit of "the users" but I'd guess that a significant proportion of users don't post much.

I hope I'm not opening a can of worms, but I'd be intrigued to hear comments from infrequent posters, to see if there's anything we can realistically change to accommodate them.

It can be any number of things, often for me, like now I'm grabbing a quick sandwich and having a look on here for ten minutes before getting back to work, so time is limited. I often work late, so again by the time I get on, there are often a lot of threads to trawl through and I don't always feel like I've got the time to post myself.

Having said all that if half the threads weren't full of people abusing each other backwards and forwards (so to speak), it would probably save no end of time. For an example, I didn't get on yesterday until last night and started reading a thread that was already about 11 pages and by the time I was half way through it had already increased to 14 but most of it was just the usual pathetic posturing by various individuals!

Is there a way to use google or something to scan the hull city forum on here to find which words are most commonly used?

I suspect the results from that would go some way to answering your question Dutch.

I guess I fall into that category.

I'm reading most of the time but rarely post, I use the not606 as a source of info on Hull City and like to see what other fans are thinking on the various topics to get a balanced view. Most of the time I see a post that agrees with what I'm thinking so I don't feel the need to say the same again, unless I feel something means that much to me I want stick my nose in.

That and most things seem to be an argument and I'm not a confrontational person and would rather watch from afar.

I'd be intrigued to know if the lurkers enjoy watching us call each other ****s all the time. I suspect not else they'd join in.

Cheers for replying. I've no problem with how people use it, it's none of my business anyway. I am just curious to hear the views on what are a significant number of users.

To be fair,a lot of the points I would make are made by other posters, especially when it comes to the whole name-change saga...

And to some extent,it's a vicious circle when a forum is like this one...you don't post that much so you're not that well known,so your input gets overlooked if a thread is flaming, like a few of the CTWD v Allam brigade ones have been on here recently..so you don't bother posting.

That's not a slight by the way....a lot of forums are full of cliques and at first it's difficult to become a part of that unless you are either deliberately belligerent or have a truly unique point of view. There's some very articulate posters on this board as well as some less capable contributors...which is pretty much a usual parameter for an online forum.

For me, I only comment on the threads that I feel are worth it. I haven't lived in Hull for over 30 years so I don't feel qualified to join in some threads but it is interesting to see what people who watch City more regularly than me think. However, I have no desire to join in slanging matches. For instance, look what happens if you make a typing error. You may as well have murdered your grandmother. The personal abuse and vitriol that is suffered by some posters on here is quite reprehensible. The whole name change affair has shown this fully. I am not in favour of the change but that doesn't give me the right to abuse others who do. This is not an attempt to re-direct the natue of this thread into another name change one. I would suggest that many potential posters are put off because they do not want to raise their heads above the parapet and risk the reactions of a small number of people who monopolise the board. I am fully expecting a negative response but let's see what other people thinnk. They are as entitled to their views as I am.

If this was posted before my reply I wouldn't have bothered myself (exactly the point I made above about someone saying what I'm thinking so I don't bother)I think this is spot on

When I read your second paragraph, the temptation to not reply was huge. <laugh>

All fair points in my opinion. It's a broad church, and often the noisy ones will dominate. I can't really see a way around that.

I am a very regular reader, but infrequent poster (am I into double figures yet?). When I first signed up I essentially used the site for 'inside news' first and foremost and only signed up to get rid of the ads. As you can probably tell from my user name I'm not a regular at the KC, although I've been a few times in the Championship, and am not going to pretend to be a lifelong City fan, but I'm old enough and local enough to have put money in buckets in the worst of the bad old days when I lived quite close to Fer Ark.

I started getting into City a bit more the season before the big promotion season, and recently when asked always said that I agreed with one of AA's statements when he bought the club - I'm a supporter more than a fan. It's brilliant for the City to have top flight football team and I want to see it do well, but I don't live and breathe HCAFC. That said I listen to the games on Humberside or watch them on dodgy web feeds so I'm hardly uninterested.

I don't post more on topic because all of the above coupled with my honesty about it means I aren't going to win any of the pointless p***ing competitions that take place on here. When I do go to the game I'll happily vote for MoM and have done, but I won't do that if I wasn't there.

I've been put off posting more on other topics I could usefully contribute to because of the endless arguments and every thread now descending into pro and anti AA and or CTWD camps. I'll do music or other stuff not worth arguing about, but don't feel any inclination to join in the big topics that people feel real passion about.

    Right, back to lurking now!
