Follow through speed or no speed was irrelevant as by then Adams had jumped over him. Berkovic's follow through much worse

Match of the day 2. Robbie Savage said its the worst sending off in premiership history. Also had a pop at fellow countryman Hughes for not questioning sending off

Gus Poyet was reluctant to say it - so John O’Shea did it for him.

Wary of an FA rap, Poyet refused to criticise referee Kevin Friend , Charlie Adam or Mark Hughes over Wes Brown’s ridiculous red card.

O’Shea did not share his manager’s reservations and the Sunderland defender felt they were all to blame for this lamest of dismissals.

He was adamant Friend blundered and that Adam and Hughes swayed the official with their reactions to Brown’s tackle .

Adam hopped on one leg before falling in Hughes’ technical area, while the Stoke boss appealed more than anyone with both arms raised.

“The reaction from Charlie could have been a bit better,” said O’Shea. “I think it’s the reaction of their bench the ref has gone on, to be honest.

“The ref’s not had the best of days, has he? Hopefully the red card will get overturned.

“He said he took his time over it, but he still managed to get it wrong because Wes has clearly won the ball. I don’t think he even touched Adam.”

Adam protested his innocence, trying to defuse the situation by agreeing Brown should not have been dismissed.

“He caught me, but I spoke to the referee and he said it was just the force after the tackle - that’s why he got sent off,” said the Scot.

“I never ever tried to get him sent off. At the time, I didn’t think it was a red card.”

While being careful with his words, Poyet called for referees to explain controversial decisions after games.

“I would like that,” said the Sunderland manager. “For us, it would be better.

“I’m a common sense person and I understand why they don’t do it because they don’t want to be every week explaining things. They’ve got a point.

“But, with specific, unique situations, please do it. Not every week. If you’re doing it every week, you have a problem, but then you’re making too many mistakes!”

Sunderland’s anger and frustration were understandable and Brown won the ball cleanly with a perfectly-executed tackle.

To compound their sense of injustice, Friend did nothing when Asmir Begovic caught Steven Fletcher with a high boot, clearing the ball.

Brown’s sending off on 36 minutes marred what up until that moment had been a decent game of football.

Sunderland began well and Fletcher fluffed a great chance before Geoff Cameron found Steven Nzonzi in the right channel and he pulled the ball back for Adam to score on 30 minutes.

There was no way back for Sunderland’s 10 men and the Potters capitalised on their tired legs nine minutes from time when Peter Crouch found Nzoni with an exquisite defence-splitting pass to make it 2-0.

O’Shea took solace from Sunderland’s spirited display, even though the Wearsiders have slipped bottom of the Premier League.

“We move on,” said the Irishman. “We have to dig deep. We’re passing the ball a lot better, moving the ball around well. But we have to be scoring our goals as well, that’s what’s going to win us matches.”

The red card furore overshadowed Nzonzi’s fine display and the Frenchman says he is revelling in Hughes’ passing game after handing in a transfer request last season.

“I’m capable of scoring goals and that’s what I try to do,” said the Potters midfielder. I’m enjoying it and we’re passing the ball a bit more.”

If he was sent off for the "follow through" then surely every tackle now has to stop immediately when the ball is touched?? Is that what Kevin Friend thinks?

By the way. Well done to the mod for merging loads of different threads. They all happened to have some modicum of relation but certainly shouldn't have been merged. I have been getting annoyed about this on this forum for a while now but this is becoming ridiculous. Just kept my gob shut in the past but it's pissing me off now

Friend should never referee again after that..He shouldn't even be allowed to referee a school boy match..He has always had a grudge against us, but this time he has surpassed himself...

SUNDERLAND were today expected to launch an appeal over Wes Brown’s red card, despite Gus Poyet’s hope that the dismissal will be rescinded without the need for one.

Centre-half Brown faces three games on the sidelines after being sent off for only the second time in his 17-year senior career in Saturday’s 2-0 defeat at Stoke City.

Head coach Poyet expressed the hope afterwards that referee Kevin Friend’s decision would be overturned without the need for Sunderland to submit an appeal to the FA.

But the Black Cats are expected to go through the formal channels of appealing a dismissal which flabbergasted Sunderland’s players and staff.

Brown will miss next weekend’s trip to Aston Villa, along with the back-to-back home games against Chelsea and Spurs, if the FA’s disciplinary commission upholds the red card.

But Sunderland are confident that an appeal would be successful after widespread public condemnation of Friend’s decision.

Former players were outraged by the dismissal on social media over the weekend.

Ex-Black Cats defender Danny Higginbotham said: “What an awful decision that was. Not even worthy of a free kick never mind a red card.”

Media pundits Robbie Savage and Ian Wright both branded it “the worst decision ever”.

And on Match of the Day, former Liverpool centre-half Alan Hansen said: “I think it’s an absolute joke. He gets 100 per cent of the ball. He’s got it totally wrong.”

Thanks, there was 19 of them, only a handfull of other topic threads left on the front page, it was agreed after merge-gate that if it were to be done then a post should be put up to see if anybody minded, it was done and no objections.

19 threads on the same topic is silly

To be fair mate, the good ones will endure because people are interested and posting on them.

The others will die a natural death without any help from mods.

This entire thread/threads has now lost it's momentum and killed the good aspects along with the bad.
