Why QPR should be ashamed of Cesar saga

Brazil goalkeeper remains stuck with a club who do not want him.

Harry Redknapp could not appear more desperate to sell Julio Cesar if he slapped a ‘for sale’ sign on the goalkeeper and stuck him in the window of the QPR club shop.

It is one of the more bizarre stories of the season: Brazil’s No1 goalkeeper who cannot get a game for a team playing in England’s second tier.

But it is no laughing matter for Cesar, who has not appeared for the Championship club this season. In fact, he has not featured for the west London side at all since a 2-0 defeat against Everton at Goodison Park back in April.

Ousted by Robert Green, Cesar is now a £90,000-a-week player sitting on the bench. It is little wonder that Redknapp and the QPR owners are desperate to get rid of him.

“We wouldn't stand in Julio's way and we aren't asking a fee for him,” said Redknapp this week, reminding us for the umpteenth time that Cesar is still there.

“He needs to play and he could play anywhere for any team. He's just been unlucky.

“Rob’s been fantastic and I can't take him out of the team. However, Julio’s a great guy, and he needs to play soon, so he can play in the World Cup.”

Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of the saga is the fact that Rangers continue to give the impression that they did nothing wrong – that Cesar is merely a victim of circumstance - so it is worth reiterating the background of Cesar’s ill-fated spell in Shepherd’s Bush.

QPR signed Green on June 21, 2012. Mark Hughes, manager at the time, said the former England No1 would be a ‘huge addition’. He made his debut against Swansea on August 18, a game which Rangers lost 5-0. Eleven days later, Rangers made their move for Cesar.

The Brazilian signed at the end of August, and immediately displaced Green from the starting line-up. Green was quickly forgotten: a victim of QPR’s relentless spending splurge, to the extent Hughes even told him he was free to leave the club the following January.

That was the way it stayed until QPR’s relegation last May, when it became immediately obvious that Cesar would have to be removed from the wage bill – except that those wages prevented any club from coming in to buy him.

Green has been reinstated, and to his credit has performed well this season. Cesar, a painful reminder of QPR’s extravagant past, became the elephant in the room, and an expensive one at that.

You can only wonder at how Cesar – and, for that matter, Green – must feel at their treatment by QPR, after a debacle which has done the west London club’s image no favours at all.

And you can only hope that the powers that be have learned a very painful lesson.

If he was desperate to get games, he would be gone by now. His wages and his obvious reluctance to take a cut of any significance have frightened off many clubs. I would feel some sympathy if I thought he cared anything about us little oul Rs.

    Very anti-Rangers article.
Multi-millionaire Cesar only had to take a pay cut and he would be playing now. Greedy!

So this dumb arse Journo b*** expects everyone to feel sorry for poor old Julio, as he takes home his £90k a week for sitting on his backside doing nothing ??

My heart bleeds for him....it really does.

Why the angst at Cesar? Surely our ire should be directed at the people who offered him the ridiculous contract in the first place.......step forward Mark Hughes, Phil 'teflon' Beard and yes our perfectly saintly Swiss Tony; a person who we cannot say negative things about

The Cesar situation is a fiasco - yes of course it is - but it takes two (or maybe 4) to tango and lumping it all on Cesar is pretty pathetic - I expected a more balanced view from people on here

I'm thinking that many of us were taken back when Cesar openly expressed his desire to play elsewhere whilst still picking up a pay cheque.
I know I was. Up until then, I had backed him but his comments were a slap in the face for not only the club but especially the fans.

His attitude was everything that was wrong about the club and the mercenaries that represented us.
They are all but gone and the club has made a vast improvement in all departments .................. we must now be doing something right.

Here we go again, £90k/w when it has been repeatedly said no one at the club was on over £65k/w. Complete and utter bollocks whole article.

The Cesar situation is easily explained. Harry didn't play him in the first few games because he and everybody else expected Julio to leave. After Green put in some very impressive performances, it would have been stupid to replace him between the sticks, and Cesars broken finger then prevented him even being used as a sub, so there we go.

As everyone and his uncle now expect Cesar to be leaving in January, there is no point in naming him in the playing squad anymore at this stage of the season. Let's just hope he gets a transfer he can be happy with, after all he's a great keeper and deserves to be playing at the top. I have nothing against him, he's really done nothing wrong in my wiev, and gave some pretty great games last season when he was at the top of his form for us.

I wish all the best for him in the future and hope to see him at WC next summer, lifting the trophy. :emoticon-0148-yes:

How could we displace Green, when he produce a club record clean sheet.
Cesar could easily have maneuvered his way out, when the Spanish and Italian clubs came for him. He knew what was going on by Murphy being on the bench and not him
However things were complicated by his broken finger too.

He just needs to go....relationship has broken down

I agree Stainesy I don't feel sorry for Cesar but then I hardly feel sorry for any of the players on an earnings basis for basically kicking a ball around a patch of grass but that's irrelevant.

Equating to a footballers wages to the 'real world' never makes any sense. I read somewhere in last weeks Telegraph that the 'boys' in One (No) Direction have 'earnt' £25m each in 18 months.....I couldn't name one of their songs tbh and I have no desire to. Is that 'fair' or do we all agree that football at the top levels is the same as being in a successful band or being a film star? I do, its called entertainment although a bit of an oxymoron based on last years QPR performances.

Not knowing the bloke at all however Cesar seems to be ok and I can't see what hes done wrong other than the Chelsea top incident which was at a private function.

Hopefully for all parties sake he will get a move in January and we can box this one off. My issues with the saga lie at the door of Hughes & Beard - if that's top football / business management then maybe I'll pack in being a Chartered Surveyor and have a crack at it

The whole point of this debate is the ridiculous title of the article, ie 'Why QPR should be ashamed of the Cesar saga', it takes two to tango, Cesar is only interested in the heaps of cash he's receiving which quite frankly is an attitude I'd be ashamed of and the asinine contract that Phil Beard ashamedly offered him on the behest of ashamedly bad football manager Mark Hughes.

The title of the article is a tad OTT to say the least.

At the time when Hughes/Beard/TF signed Cesar they obviously did it in good faith, lets face it who'd had thought that little old QPR would sign such a player, and initially things were ok....ish, he played well, got us some crucial points with outstanding performances. But as we know it didn't work out and it became apparent that the club wanted rid, he wanted out due to WC asperations and that should have been that. During the summer transfer window it became obvious that his wages were a problem to any purchasing club and to my mind that is when he should have said that he would take a drop in wages, even 20k a week (can't believe I just typed that as if it was £50) which is a 30% drop assuming he is on 65K per week to push through a deal and get himself playing again.

The club have put him in the shop window for sale, they want no fee for him, it is now down to himself as to how this progresses. If he is still with us in February we will know thw answer.

    Club ashamed.....I don't think so.

"Sue Denim" Ha, ha, ha. How funny. Can't even put your real name to a piece. Lots of anti QPR articles appear on HereInTheCity (HITC).

Another has just appeared by "Sue Denim":

Joey Barton drops another QPR exit hint?

Midfielder says he's not looking beyond the end of the season with Championship club.

Joey Barton spent virtually the entire summer angling for a move from QPR to Marseille, and his latest remarks won’t do much to convince the fans that he’s going to stick around.

Barton revealed that Rangers chairman Tony Fernandes ‘blocked’ his move to the Ligue 1 team, convincing him to remain at the west London Championship club.

The 31-year-old has been one of QPR’s top performers so far this season. In their most recent outing, it was Barton whose late free-kick earned a point from a 1-1 draw with Reading.

However, while Barton puts his recent re-emergence down to the QPR fans, he insisted he is not looking past the end of the season – hardly reassuring words from the midfielder.

In an interview with the Brent & Kilburn Times, Barton said: 'I still believe that I am a Premier League player. I am part of a club that got relegated. I wasn’t here to be part of that. But I have a contract and I am here to get the club back in the Premier League.

'Beyond that is getting too far ahead of ourselves. Is it a good thing that I didn’t go to France? Not really, no – I had an offer on the table from Marseille.'

As if to soften the blow of those words, Barton went on to thank the QPR fans, who have stood by him since his 10-match Premier League ban which he earned for confronting Manchester City’s players on the final day of the 2011-12 season.

He said: 'I’ve been on record before in saying that I was disappointed with my own performances in my first season at QPR. It was something that didn’t sit well with me. I’m really thankful that the club and the fans have given me the opportunity to show that that’s not what I am like as a player.

'What has changed? A number of things; things change in your personal life. Confidence as well, knowing that the fans believe in you makes such a massive difference to players.

'I am as thick-skinned as they come, but when your own fans criticise you it can be difficult.'

Poor love. All he wants is to play. Well he knows what he has to do then doesn't he Sue. Or is your point that our owners should compound the errors they made last year by offering to any prospective buyer that we'd be happy to atone for the mistakes by offering to pay the difference between the wages he is currently on and the figure they think he's worth. Get over it. He may not play in the World Cup but he'll be a rich little chappy at our expense. Better still, would you like to chip in so that he can get his move away from the hell hole he finds himself in?
