GUS Poyet says his opening talks over transfers with Sunderlandâs director of football, Roberto De Fanti, went well. And the Black Catsâ head coach hopes that together the pair can help restructure and improve the squad in the January transfer window. The Uruguayan and the Italian met in London last weekend, with Poyet happy to accept the new management system but insistent it has to work well. He told the Echo: âIâve told him my opinions about everybody and Iâve told him what I think we should be looking for. âThey will manage it and then I will start checking on them every now and then â I like to go and see players live, if itâs possible. âWe talked about a position the other day and considered four players. âI picked two. It was simple. âOne of the other two was a definite no. If that one is coming, I wonât be here.â Poyet says he has given a lot of consideration to what needs to be done with Sunderlandâs squad and has not been influenced by any particular result. âI donât go on my emotions,â he said. âPeople say maybe after Hull, you want to change half of the team and now because youâve won two games, you donât want to change anyone. âNo. Iâve got it clear. âThe players who are here have this opportunity, but there are things that I think we need. âIf we can find them, then weâll do it and the rest will depend on how we go. âYou never know what will happen with injuries. You might get a massive injury and you need to be quick and ready. âIf something happens tomorrow, then we need to have a possibility.â The director of football model is new to Sunderland and has come under critical scrutiny in recent months, with questions being asked about how whether it genuinely works. But Poyet says it will work if all parties respect each other. âThe sporting director exists everywhere in the world,â he reflected. âI know in England, itâs not very common. The manager is normally in charge of everything. âBut I had it at Zaragoza as a player. âMy situation is clear. âI met with Roberto and Valentino (Angeloni, Sunderlandâs chief scout) and said what I think we need. âThey need to give me the options and I need to pick the ones I like. âWe need to see if they are available and if they fit into the financial possibilities, then we will move forward. âI would like to think it will be easy to see with the players who come in, whether I was involved or not. âIâm sure itâs going to be done in the right way; in the common sense way. âEveryone has a responsibility and then the player has to be the right one for me. âIf not, Iâm not going to accept it.â The more i read from this bloke the more i like him, he talks a lot of sense and seems to have a definite idea about what he wants and how we should play.
I agree mate. I know Paolo was busy with pre season and was putting in 15 hour days. And by his own admission stepped back from transfers and accepted what came in even though it's not what he wanted. But he should have put his foot down and forced more input into transfers. Poyet has so much back bone. I love it.
“One of the other two was a definite no. If that one is coming, I won’t be here.” I wonder who that was? I like poyet, but he is outlining what I would expect the DoF and head Coach relationship should any way. If it didnt work like that, then thats when the **** flies
still not convinced PDC didnt give a green light to the transfers, i know what he says now but that doesnt follow what he said before he was sacked. We'll never know for certain.

Absolutely and, in theory, it should give him more options. `I like to go and see players live` I read into that he`s not going to accept other peoples advice at face value, neither is he going to allow signings he hasn`t vetted personally or specifically requested. I`m really beginning to think this bloke has something special. It may take a few seasons but I genuinely think he`ll get a damn good team together.
I'm loving this guy mate, seems genuine and sincere and sounds like he knows exactly what he wants for us. That'll do for me mate, a bit of stability with steady improvement.
yes marra, somehow doesnt have a feel of a false dawn, but we've all said that before, pdc felt different, then we realised he was a gobshite lunatic, gus seems like a head screwed on lunatic, just what we need
We appear to have got a class-act as our manager now.The more I hear him,the more I am liking him.We are safe and secure as a club under Gus!
It's a very strange mix of calmness and excitement that we've not had before. It's usually one thing or another.
It really is this ^. We`re not used to it. Playing players in their proper positions. Whatever next! His comments, insights, ideas? they seem to match up with mine. Very strange. Can`t get used to the idea that we have a manager who thinks like I do. Personal opinion obviously but to have a manager on the same wavelength as me is a novelty to say the least. I don`t know where this is going but I have a feeling it`s going to be interesting and a damn sight more entertaining.
I can't get over the fact that he seems to know what he wants, how he wants us to play, even identifying players that he needs to bring in so he's obviously sussed the teams weak points. Previous managers have just spouted crap and tried to deflect any blame before they fail, this guy is different in EVERY way. My only concern, and it's only a slight concern right now, is that Ellis has kept in the background since appointing Gus. Now that could be a good strategy to let Gus find his feet but i wish he would come out and tell us his plans for the club under the new regime. What was the remit he gave to Gus? will he be financing new signings in January? come on Ellis, give us a clue mate.
This could be just what we need as supporters. We were excited to get people like Keane and O'Neill for various reasons. With Poyet people weren't excited but I think we're slowing starting to wonder, if by pure chance, we've actually dropped on the right man at last. TBH, I've heard so much crap, from the likes of Bruce & O'Neill, that I never bothered listening to Poyet .......... all of a sudden I've starting paying attention. Everything he says makes perfect sense, I think I'm going insane.
Can't believe the headline in one of the papers this morning on Sky Sports. I didn't catch which one but they have some how turned this story into a headline of Bye Bye Gus! Saying he has threatened to walk out if he does not get his own signings! I give up on the press
