Candidates for honorary degrees are initially nominated by the university's alumni and not by the university awarding the degree. The 1.5 million pound donation to Hull University in 2009 to help establish research laboratories to study heart disease and cancer would not have triggered Dr. Allam's award as he must have been originally proposed by an independent body or individual. As for using the title - he is perfectly within his rights to do so and it really comes down to a matter of personal choice. When I was awarded my PhD (not an honorary award I hasten to add) I was advised by a senior colleague that I should always be sure to use the title "Dr" when applying for bank loans, writing letters of complaint or making job applications. However, there is a significant downside to everyday use of the title if you don't have specific medical qualifications - travelling on ferries and airlines where my booking has been made using a credit /debit card which refers to me as Dr. has resulted in my being summoned to deal with several medical emergencies where an intimate knowledge of the working of a diesel engine or even the ability to pass a football with slide rule accuracy would just not have cut the mustard.
All true, but when did you hear anyone refer to Dr Barmby or Dr Collina? I'm saying that his sudden persistant use of the title is, as I suspect, to add a gravitas to his argument that it hasnt earned and this ties in literally beautifully with your received advice above.
I really don't understand the position of unquestioning support some of you have? It's not wrong to question people. I can still be thankful for what our owner did for city and question his current dealings, do you get that?
I think he's used the title on realisation of ring recognised as a doctor. I think with the whole fiasco Allam/club employees or even the man himself have been trawling all the forums looking at fan opinions, reactions and general consensus. Upon doing so they have found him being referred to correctly as Dr. Allam, so he has decided to title himself properly as he should. I wasn't even aware Dr. Barmby had been awarded a doctorate and who the **** is this Dr. Collins you keep rambling on about?
Well said and spot on. Time to forget this nonsense now and get back to supporting the TEAM ON THE PITCH. As DR Allam says, if you dont like it then dont go.
No wonder I'd never heard of an Italian referee. I could count referees I know in this country on one hand, never mind foreign ones.
How on earth do you tell young kids that there favourite players wont be here next season ? That is something that i dont look forward to doing when the time comes Allams say they saved Hull City as a gift for the city of Hull. Very nice. So how about now doing the next best thing then by handing it over to us and leaving whilst they can ?
Not had time to read all the posts but just the first one. One thing that stands out to me is the 'Dr.' title that people latch onto as if it gives Allam some legitimacy to act like a dictator. Change is good, but not riding roughshod over history and ignoring the fans concerns.
The way some have been going on its makes one wonder at times. If the name change does not bring in the incomes that Dr Allam says it will then all the protesting will be justified. Time to focus on whats important. What happens on the pitch.
Read a bit more, interesting comments about it being a 'clique' of fans raising questions about Allam and his plans, I'm certainly not in a clique here or anywhere else.
You dont understand much at the best of times. I am not happy about losing City from the name but if it brings in big money then so be it. Change is not always a bad thing. What utter rubbish ^^^^^ this. Get a grip ffs.
It's interesting, if he does get his own way, where will it end? He knows if he gets his own way here, he can do whatever he wants. He'll know some of the fans will back him in his plans, however farfetched they are, because all he has to say is "it's for the better of the club". Also, the ones most likely to act against it will be out the way through not renewing.
I'm proud of our fans for not rolling over to get their bellies tickled over for the most part, it's actually scary that people would let him do whatever he wants without any questions being asked at all (reply to Golaccio)
quisling. fits with being french i suppose. there's a couple of hours on saturday to support the team on the pitch. 3pm is the time for that. meanwhile someone's messing with things that shouldn't be messed with.
