I had one, so I'm not exactly down with the kids! I've got a fair collection of ROMs for the emulators now
Currently pissing around with Torchlight 2 mods, but I prefer most games as they are meant to be played. Re: SteamBox, I already hook my (gaming) laptop up to my tv with connected xbox controllers anyway. The problem with the whole PC vs console thing lately is that most games are developed for both, so the developers don't really bother to make different versions for each. So usually the PC version ends up looking exactly like the 360/PS3 versions. So even if you do upgrade you don't get a massive change. Someone I work with pre-ordered their XOne with GAME, who tried to take payment yesterday in order to ship it out today, only for Nationwide to block it thinking it wasn't him paying for it. So he's had aggro telling nationwide to basically piss off and they should call him before blocking transactions to confirm. He's spoken to GAME who are going to try and charge again today but there's no guarantee that he'll get it on launch day. I have no idea why GAME haven't charged people well in advance, like I was when I pre-ordered with shopto.net, they charged my card on the 9th in case of any issues (there was also an option to pre-pay manually which is quite useful). EDIT: Went off at a bit of a tangent there lol
Well it's a while since I deleted my Windows partition so I'm not really up on console ports but I know there are many games which are PC first/only/enhanced. But your point is certainly valid. The whole forum's off on a tangent lately so no-one'll bat an eye!
The future , well in the eighties , still got a spectrum 128k boxed and was just as useless then as now , but I grasped the technology with both hands and saw the light only it was pretty dim . http://oldcomputers.net/c64. htmlhttp://computermuseum.50megs.com/brands/zxspectrum128.htm
You kids have no idea. It was a beast of a machine, 1 MHz CPU and 64K memory. People knew how to programme in those days, pushing hardware to its limits. This'll mean nothing to you, but I wrote an assembler and BASIC toolkit for that beauty. Ahhh, memories
I remember the Megadrive coming out. I was in awe. Loved Sonic. My frst experience of gaming was in the 80's on an Amstrad (Alan Sugar) Special. You loaded the audio tapes in and then you'd get weird fax-like noises as the data loaded. The hours I spent on Roland Goes Digging.
Talking of tape loads.... there was a computer tv prog, I forget the name, where they actually broadcast a game as "weird fax-like noises" during the show and I recorded it with a small cassette player! I once typed in a game into the CBM64 from a computer magazine (all hex doubles). It took bloody ages to enter and was a right pain. The game wasn't that great and I never did it again!
Out of interest - what's a typical price for a new (blockbuster?) console game? Is it the same across all platforms?
You lost me after Torchlight 2. I pre ordered a PS4 for my boy for Christmas and now he's decided he doesn't want one. KIDS!!!!!!
Interesting Tom, thanks. I payed £24.99 for Metro:Last Light (desktop) and believe it or not, that's the most I've ever payed for a game! I usually pay around a fiver or less, usually in a Steam sale. Call me tight or call me a casual gamer, up to you I quite fancy a crack at Football Manager 2014 but I'm not prepared to pay £34.99. That price corresponds to the console price I'm guessing. Anyone tried this one?
PC ftw Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag Xbox 360 - £39.97 - released 29 oct Xbox One - £48.00 - release Nov 22nd PlayStation4 - £48.00 - release Nov 22nd PlayStation3 - £39.97 - release Oct 29th Nintendo Wii U - £40.49 - release Nov 22nd PC - £29.99 - release Nov 22nd Yes, buy a console, and get ripped off - I mean the PC version of Assassins creed is just awesome looking and its cheaper.
PC games are cheaper to buy than games on a console, but I don't fancy paying £49.99 for a game on the ps4/xbox one but probably will anyway
PC ftw I agree...if you have a top end PC like me / us. Otherwise it can be pretty jittery and laggy. I played an overly modded Skyrim once (almost 200 mods running) and it did tend to crash a bit
Cheers Swans I suppose I could have gone and just checked myself Interesting disparity in prices there, no surprise the latest gen consoles' cost more. Kinda my point with SteamOS, they're aiming for a console-like experience out of the box but with upgradeable hardware and unlocked tinkering and still PC prices. The more competition the better in my book. Agree with you both. Let's hope this doesn't descend into a pissing contest, I doubt I'll win!
I bought Battlefield 4 the other day, and although my old GPU can't quite play it in ultra settings, it can still play it in high settings, with a 30-40ish frame rate. Which is probably still better than the PS4. I honestly don't get consoles, as your buying something for a market that is ever growing, so that in 7 years time, whilst the PS4 will still be running on the old GPU's, PC 's will be further ahead again. Now if only we can get the developers to stop with consoles ports to PC, and do it the other way around, we would be laughing. Like you Daimund, I don't want it to end in a pissing contest, but for me personally, I believe consoles are coming to the end of their lifetime. Even the upgrades from last gen to next gen consoles have left many people wondering why they didn't improve them more, instead they seemed to focus on keeping the price low. Which is no good when its got to last a fair few years before a new gen is out.
