Fookin hate snow me like, alright for the unemployed or housewives, nothing but a nuisance for commuters and bloody dangerous

LONG-RANGE weather forecasters have warned that Britain should prepare for heavy and persistent snow for up to THREE MONTHS with winter 2013 set to be the worst in more than 60 years. The latest detailed forecasts for winter 2013 ALL point towards months of relentless extreme cold with heavy snow ‘extremely likely’ across the country. Arctic air will roar in from the North Pole later this week, triggering the start of the worst winter in many people’s lifetimes. Experts in long-range weather forecasting said the WHOLE of Britain should be prepared for this winter to be the most severe since 1947, which saw the UK hit by relentless snow and some of the lowest temperatures on record. February 1947 was the coldest in history with heavy snow the following month leading to seven-metre high drifts. Flooding was also a problem as rain ran off frozen ground in torrents leading to widespread chaos on the roads. As the Daily Express reported at the time, roads and railways across Britain were blocked by huge Arctic blizzards. Coal supplies – already low in the wake of WWII – struggled to get reach power stations and many were forced to shut down, causing widespread blackouts. The lack of power supplies became so critical that at one point radio and TV broadcasts were suspended, magazines were ordered to stop being published and many newspapers were forced to cut their size. And the latest long-range predictions for this winter show a pattern that look eerily similar to that infamous year, with bitter Arctic gales leading to feet-deep snow drifts right up until February. Jonathan Powell, forecaster for Vantage Weather Services, said: “Early indications are that this winter is looking particularly severe, and we could see parallels with the shocking winter of 1947

that means it will probably be the mildest winter for years as they always get the forecasts right.

I love going sledging over the ski slope, but on the downside it means I've got to muck in with the team I'm in charge of on nightshifts to clear snow and grit steps, footpaths etc..So on the whole, I really hope this is just another one of the usual claptrap predictions which comes out this time every year regarding severe snowfall..

our lass will crash her car no doubt (again) i'll slip and bruise my arse, i'll scrape my knuckles whilst clearing my windscreen as always, i'll drag fresh snow onto myself while clearing the car. I'll get **** for not clearing the wifes before heading off to work, we wont be able to get out of the estate AGAIN! the gritters wont have gritted the roads i drive on. some daft bugger will be over cautious and i will have to make a super manouver to miss HER! I will have to help push somebody off thus spraying dirty snow all over me

Wouldn't mind a bit of snow here in Abu Dhabi, i've only had 20 minutes of rain in the last 8 months...but at a nice 30 degrees throughout the winter, I shouldn't complain too much

This is such a f**ked up piece of journalistic crap.

Weather forecasting generally is an inexact science; however, in the last 10-to-15 years with the advent of much improved computer models and satellite data, meteorologists can be more accurate ...up to a point! Generally, they can forecast the weather and get it right most of the time up to 4 or 5 days in advance, though they can almost as easily get it wrong after just 2. In reality, there are too many variables for the information to be known with any degree of reliability beyond 2 days.

This begs the question, how can they predict the weather for the next 4+ months? -simple answer, they can't. So on what basis can they make such claims? -it's based on the pattern of weather until now, so, in previous years from the records, a similar pattern of weather has lead to a severe winter. Can we rely on those records? -generally yes, they have been meticulously recorded and well kept for over a century, though older records only have information from the ground level, so compared to records in the last 20 years they are much less comprehensive.

Does it follow that a previous similar pattern year, until now will result in a similar continuation of the weather for the next 4 months? -no, it is utter bollocks, the best you can say is that there is a higher probability of the same continuing weather pattern, so the next time someone tells you it's going to be a really bad winter this year, ask them not to shower you with their verbal excrement.

Agree with this - if ever you see a ONE WEEK forecast they always say that it is far too early to tell with any degree of accuracy what it will be doing at the end of the week, therefore it is completely impossible for them to predict now what it will be doing at Xmas never mind March!!!

quite like the Thundersnow today <cool>
from Wiki - kind of thunderstorm with snow falling as the primary precipitation instead of rain. It typically falls in regions of strong upward motion within the cold sector of an extratropical cyclone. Thermodynamically, it is not different from any other type of thunderstorms but the top of the cumulonimbus is usually quite low. As well as snow, graupel or hail falls...

good name for a rock band too :bandit:
