Sunderland open talks with striker Ji Dong-Won by James Hunter, Evening Chronicle Jun 10 2011 The Black Cats are understood to have agreed a fee of around £1m with K-League side Chunnam Dragons for the 20-year-old, who scored four goals for South Korea in this yearâs Asian Cup. The 6ft 1in frontman also scored for his country this week in their 2-1 friendly win over Ghana â a game that also saw Sunderlandâs Asamoah Gyan on the scoresheet for the Black Stars. Dong-Won is one of a clutch of strikers being pursued by Sunderland boss Steve Bruce as he looks to strengthen his threadbare attack. Fraizer Campbellâs long-term knee injury, Darren Bentâs departure to Aston Villa in January and the return of on-loan Danny Welbeck to Manchester United has left Bruce with £13m record buy Gyan as his only frontman as things stand. And Bruce wants to bring in three more frontmen over the summer to fill the gaps. Sunderland have already agreed a £3m fee with Liverpool for French striker David NâGog, but the 23-year-old is currently stalling to see if there is any other interest from elsewhere. Bruce is also considering a £9m bid for Ipswich Town hot property Connor Wickham. Sunderland had a £6m offer for the 18-year-old rejected last summer, but the sale of Bent for £24m and Jordan Henderson for £20m means they have the money to up the ante. Liverpool have also been strongly linked with the England under-21 international, but Sunderland can offer first-team football, while at Anfield Wickham would be behind Luis Suarez and former Newcastle hitman Andy Carroll in the pecking order. But the man Bruce wants to land above all others is Spursâ England targetman Peter Crouch â although he may have a hard time convincing Harry Redknapp to sell. Redknapp insisted this week that he wants to hang on to Crouch, saying: âCrouchy is a good player. I like him. He is a great lad and I love him as a fella. He is not one Iâm looking to shift. âWe are looking to bring a striker in but he is not one of those that we are looking to sell, if we can help it.â The problem for Bruce is that Redknapp wants to sign Gyan, and Spurs may try to include the Ghana frontman in any deal for Crouch. But that would not suit Bruce, who wants to add to his attacking options rather than bring one striker in, only to lose another. Bruce missed out on Crouch two years ago, when the former Portsmouth man turned down a move to Sunderland in favour of joining the Londoners. Sunderland are also interested in Crouchâs teammate Roman Pavlyuchenko, but it is unlikely the Russian will be keen on relocating to the North East Harry can play Brucie , and he knows it.
Anyone remember a certain Dong Gook Lee? Another Korean that had un-doubted talent, whatever happened to him?
