Gus Poyet will explore the possibility of turning Ki Sung-Yueng's loan deal at Sunderland into a permanent transfer. The South Korea international moved to the Stadium of Light over the summer, with former Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio striking a season-long agreement with Swansea City. Swansea were quick to point out at the time that they were not turning their back on Ki and still considered him to be part of their future. The terms of his loan are not believed to include a release clause which could be triggered by Sunderland. Poyet has, however, been impressed by what he has seen from the former Celtic man and would welcome the opportunity to keep him on Wearside. Gus Poyet said in the Northern Echo: "It is still early doors and I don't know how expensive he is. But we will see. He plays the type of football that I really admire. "He has the ability to pass the ball with just one touch and change from one side to the other, or run with the ball and have a shot with either foot. "If he believes that he can do a bit of the work the other way, the defensive way, he is a player who can give us the lot." Ki, who cost Swansea £6million in the summer of 2012, has made the holding midfield role his own at Sunderland over recent weeks. Lee Cattermole has paid the price for a costly dismissal and a subsequent ban, and he may struggle to earn an instant recall after serving the final game of his suspension during a trip to Stoke City on Saturday. Gus Poyet added: "He (Ki) had to wait for his chance. In the beginning, it was Lee Cattermole in there and he wanted to play in that position. "Then there was the sending off, and he needed to come in and show the manager that he wanted the shirt. He had to make it difficult for Lee to come back. He is there at the moment, and he has the chance to stay there."
I Gus Poyet! Surely if we offer Swansea £6m (the same that they paid) then they wouldn't be unhappy with that (if he's not part of their plans). In a season where you have a lot of games (i.e. Europa League), then surely you'd keep hold of a player who is capable of playing in the midfield and is very good in that position. Hope we can get him permanently as he's a cracking player And, before anyone says it, I know I'm doing an "about turn" on my comment when we tried to (and did) sign him when I said "why do we want a player who's not good enough for Swansea when they are the type of team we should be competing with" - but having watched him play, I now admit I was wrong!
Can't see Swansea having him "in their plans" if they let him come to us for the whole season. Bit strange this one. But I'd sign him up if we can.
You've never claimed to be always right fella, unlike a certain NOPUSSWITHGUS who well and truly hung him out to dry. http://www.not606.com/showthread.php/225867-Ki-Sung-Yueng Bravo Vaughan!
He's a cracking player. I'd be over the moon if we signed him permanently. He's the sort of player you build a team around imo.
Be brilliant if we can get him permanently, he knocks spots off Catts but i seem to remember Laudrup saying that he was only coming to us to get game time and experience and he wouldn't be selling.
I can speak this type of Dutch - it translates roughly as "I don't really want him here so if I say this it will mean you have to offer me a bit more money for him" I think he's a better footballer than Cattermole without dolubt (although Catts is getting better) but I also think Catts is a better player than Colback overall - think Ki and Catts could work but Jack is doing a cracking job at the moment so Catts has to win his place back. Cattermole is, IMO, the best leader we have at the club (Only one that comes close is Brown)
They're all different types of player mate. Jack for me has been MOTM in 2 of our last 3 games, Brown got the last match with Jack a very close second. Ki offers us something different than Catts. I agree, Catts is a born leader but just too inconsistent on the pitch and while i agree, his game has improved a hell of a lot, his temperament hasn't and there's always that chance he will see red at any time. Ki's distribution is sublime and coupled with JC's workrate they will take some shifting.
As someone who grew up with supporters who would raise the roof at Roker, for every crunching tackle, do you think the likes of Ki is the way forward? Too many of my heroes are players like Alex Rae, Danny Kaye and Bally ....... our classy players like Arnott & Henderson never seem to truly win over the crowd. I've noticed that the supporters, including me, seem to be latching onto the 'Poyet Plan' remarkably quickly, as are more of the players tbh. I was at the last derby and, despite it being such a vital game, I thought the crowd was incredibly patient. At 1-1, with time running out, the natural reaction of the crowd would, all too often, have been to want us to lump it forward. But we were happy to work the ball forward with players running off the ball and score the winner. Are the times changing do you reckon?
Unfortunately mate, the days when the likes of Bryan Robson, Ince, McMahon, Keane, Bally and others like them are gone. They wouldn't be allowed to play in the modern game which is why Catts needs to adapt or he'll drift into obscurity. I'm not saying it's right either as like you, i grew up watching and cheering them players and i loved it, it was a mans game, but not anymore. Poyet's style of play is very pleasing on the eye mind, maybe not right now with our current squad, but maybe in a few months when he's had time to stamp his mark on the team. It's working for the likes of Southampton and Swansea so why not us?
Good point mate. Despite our fears that we'll never do owt there's no logical reason we can't. Do either of those clubs have anything we don't ........ not that I can see.
Exactly and early indications are that we have that in place now. Just been reading what he is saying about Altidore in todays Echo, he reckons he can get goals out of him. Bit of a bold statement like but if he can???? we do need something in place incase Fletch gets crocked again.
