I think VHS succeeded because Matsushita (= Panasonic) sussed out that the way to go was to buy up the Hollywood film libraries and release the films; quite late in the day, Sony wised up and bought Columbia.....

You can still see one of these ocassionally. East Yorkshire have preserved one of these and I believe you can hire it. Only ever seen it at the front of the garage down Anlaby Road when I have been driving past.
Re Stan's reply: That is exactly what the VHS vendors did, get all the best films on its side whether that is 'aggressive marketing' I've no idea, thing is even Sony ended up making VHS machines in the end, or branding someone else's machines Sony, can't remember now. Funny thing was I use to get 3 films for a fiver or something for the weekend from Pellings in Hessle, they are no more either, and by the time I got to the shop all the naughtier ones had gone from the shelves lol, actually rented my first video recorder from Pellings, Sanyo 9300 where the film slot use to pop out of the top, huge machine but faultless in operation, quite a novelty back in those days of watching one side and taping the other.
