Martin O'Neill has hit back at Paolo Di Canio with the spat between the two former Sunderland managers showing little sign of abating. The Ulsterman, who was replaced by the Italian following his own sacking by the Black Cats in March, described his successor as a "managerial charlatan" following a sustained attack on his regime during his stint at the Stadium of Light. Di Canio responded in an exclusive interview with Sky Sports News on Friday, instead accusing O'Neill of being the charlatan and decrying his transfer dealings in particular. But speaking after his side's 3-0 friendly victory over Latvia on Friday night, the new Republic of Ireland manager said: "At the end of the day, it's hardly worth it. "You would have to go and check, but I don't think Sunderland would concur with his £40million for a start. Even Sunderland wouldn't do that. "Seriously, one of those people he's talking about [Steven Fletcher] actually, his goals helped Sunderland stay in the league, and Mignolet, they got £10million for. "I think they owe a debt of gratitude to [Ireland goalkeeping coach] old Seamus McDonagh, who was out there tonight, McDonagh who I think Simon Mignolet - who is playing brilliantly for Liverpool - would say he had a major influence in his career development." Di Canio, who led Sunderland to Premier League survival last season before being sacked after five games of the current campaign, told Sky Sports News: "I don't know if he knows the meaning of this word charlatan. Probably I can teach him, even if I am not English. "I respect the opinion of manager Martin O'Neill but the fact that he spoke after six months, not straight away, that proves what kind of level he is. He is not very big. "A charlatan is a manager who spends £40million to be a top 10 club and then sees the club sink into the relegation zone." Starting to sound like a couple of ****ing kids, I'd like to take the opportunity to tell them both to PISS OFF!
Both getting on my tits but why in MON bring Ming into it, he didn't sign him and he was always going to develop into class keeper
I thought that, it was Bruce, or someone else at the club, who brought in Mignolet. And MON's figures on transfers is way out anarl. You ****ed up mate ...... you had enormous goodwill from the supporters, ****ed it up by taking us to the brink of relegation and now you're having pop after pop at the club. Just **** off eh?
We were down if he stayed end of. We mustered 1 shot against Norwich who played 70 mins with 10 men and who shouldve won if Holt scored that sitter. QPR stuffed us, we were sh!te!!
They both need to shut up, MON was taking us down and PDC totally ****ed his chance by being a loon, just put it to bed and move on chaps because we really don't care anymore. Gus for my money has done what neither of them could in his short time here, brought a style of play it's actually enjoyable to watch and unity and fight to a sub standard squad. What I like the best though is he can hardly keep a smile off his face when talking about the club, he knows he has a massive opportunity here, seems to be enjoying it and has a plan to keep us up and take us forward.
I used to like MON, but honestly wish he'd just **** off now. 40m sounds about right to me? Fletch 15m, Johnson 12m, Graham 5m, N'Diaye 3m. Add in the signing fees for Saha and Cuellar, and he won't have been far off that outlay whilst recouping nought. PDC may not have had the best run but his net spend was approx. nil, and none of the players he wanted were even brought in. And mig? Signed by Bruce sold by PDC, why does MON want a pat on the back for that? Simple fact is he was taking us down whilst playing possibly the worst football of any club in premier league history? Just shut up MON and piss off, you're well past it.
Tees mate ..... I'll have a moan here which, to be fair, I don't do very often. I flew back for that to Luton, was picked up by the lads and tried to buy Sunderland tickets, outside the ground, but ended up with home seats next to the away section. We were surrounded by Cockneys, frothing at the mouth at the Sunderland supporters, and had to watch a team of internationals totally & utterly humiliated by a bunch of useless knackers. I was ashamed.
I bet you were mate. It wouldve been bad enough sat in that $hitty stadium with the Sunderland fans never mind Southern softies. I remember MON havin a pathetic excuse for that loss
Of all the revelations re the bust up with Paulo etc, there was an unfathomable quote from one of our players saying they would run through walls for O'Neil - oh really?
Neither of these ex-managers have the grace of Mick Mc....the manager who got next to no money to spend and who didn't twine to the press when he got sacked, and to my knowledge has never slagged off our club.He will be remembered as a gentleman, unlike these two bitter and twisted losers!!
