Phew ! This lively four-fourer features David Sunley and Stuart Pearson both hitting the onion bag. (Was Ken Knighton injured?) Unfortunately, this game was marred by ugly commentating from Keith Macklin. No players with tats, no sponsors on shirts, no mascots, no egocentric chairmen. Enjoy.
Thanks for this. I really like Big Match Revisited. Sadly, they only did two seasons: 78/79 and 82/83. The Derby v Fulham match (featured on the last day of 82/83) really stands out
It's not been on ITV4 for a while.... MUFC were on telly every week in 74/75 .....except when we dicked them at BP.
I watch the Big Match from the day they went down. Quality of the footage was ****e though. Mad scenes at the end of this one:
A PT masterclass. Must say I always admired Chelsea for the way they usually had soft porn films advertised behind the goals.
Two on MOTD Sat night. On a good weekend, you could get brief highlights (30 secs max) on BBC 2 News on sat mid evening. Then on Sunday , local game on YTV (rarely us) plus highlights of one other from another region (Granada, ATV or LWT) If you were crafty, you also got Anglia or Tyne Tees as well as YTV, and they had a different local game with different second game highlights......
You probably know this already but... On BMR, it was revealed that only something like 89mins 20 secs was played and the ref was blowing for offside rather than fulltime. Fulham appealed (as they needed a win to go up) and asked for a replay, which Derby agreed to (as other results meant they were safe), but the FA refused.
Cheers. Although, what I meant was, live broadcasts of games per season? Though I'm assuming these were very infrequent. Would some England matches get live broadcast? Would any other games get live broadcast? When I was a kid we had Redifussion. Despite living in Hull, we didn't have YTV. Just Tyne Tees and (spinning knight on a horse) Anglia.
Doesn't surprise me 53,000 at Roker Park in 1973
Most England games just highlights- it was exceptional for whole game. Friendlies ignored. European games on Sportsnight with Coleman...commentary sounded like it was from a call box and pictures were grainy.
Funny, when we hear the excuses regarding acoustics for the lack of noise at the KC, how much noise Wednesday fans made with no roof. Maybe it is to do with the fact they had a lot of people who sang and we don't.
It was generally only the FA Cup final that would be broadcast live in those days...along with with a couple of Home International games..(Eng v Sco was usually shown live),and World Cup and Euro Champ games..
A rare live game on a Saturday night...Euro 72 Quarter Final v the Krauts. Gunter Netzer owned us (as I believe you young uns say) that night. He was nowhere in WC74 though.

I like that sort of commentary. I think I recall some games as a kid just having the second half broadcast live. With regard to BMR again, one of the best things I like was Brian Moore reading out kids' full name, address and age in the weekly letters: "...and 9 year old Matthew Penbridge, of 19 Cuddlebank Road, Luton, writes into to say that his dad is having is having a fine job digging out his car out the snow, wearing nothing but his lucky Arsenal mittens. Ha ha, that's a funny story Matthew. Matthew also adds that he is left at home all alone till eleven every Tuesday evening...."
