Would a forward now be allowed to stand on the edge of opposition penalty box and not move at all to someone went by him then cut it back to him and he could score. Just wondering as he would not be interfering. Can someone also explain how the 3 offside newcastle players weren't interfering on sunday standing in front of friedel one of them even let it go under his foot. Was that a ref mistake or have the rules changed again?

Yes because he's in an onside position when the ball is played.

Can't remember the newcastle situation but if it was exactly as you described I'd say they were interfering with play.

Sure it was brought in as injured players were getting flagged offside.
Should go back to how it was and offside is offside, the rule now is stupid.
Then if a player is clearly injured the ref can ignore him.

It's gaining an unfair advantage and is a grey area, but I think overall he would be allowed to do that which is stupid.

The NUFC incident was offside, it was a linesman error and not a fault in the rules on that occasion.

Saw that - I could not understand it as Freidel had to make a save down to his right despite the offside Newcastle player clearly being in the line of sight (and lifting his leg!) the ball went for a corner (it nearly went in) so instead of being a free kick to Spurs the scum got a corner from it

    I'm gonna disagree..I know your shocked...<laugh>
I like the offside rule as it is now simply because it leads to more goals. Goals make games imo.
I also think the actual goals should be made bigger to accommodate the fact that Goalkeepers have got bigger over the years.

I remember Cloughie's take on this was that if a player wasn't interfering with play, what was he doing on the pitch in the first place. I agree entirely.

This active/passive nonsense makes a mockery of the game. We always used to say that no woman could explain the offside rule. Now nobody can. Worst of all we have to listen to Shearer and Lawrenson drone on each week explaining why they think that a linesman (sorry, assistant referee) got it right/wrong.

Anyone remember City on Sunday when one of their players was standing off the field and ran back on when the ball was played forward to him - is that not offside as he was behind the keeper and last defender when the ball was played

Where exactly does that end? Humans (generally) have got bigger over the last 40-50 years so does that mean we should make the pitch bigger as well?

Leave the goals as they are but the offiside rule needs changing.

If a player is standing 10 yards offside and the defender stood between him and the keeper heads the ball away then, by definition, that player has to be interfering as he has caused the defender to do this. If the opposition scored then it is as a direct result of that player being stood in an offside position. It has happened to us a couple of times where a defender has cleared the ball on the stretch due to it being played to a person who was offside and the oppo have scored (Goiing back a few years I know but definitely remember it happening). If a player is stood in an offside position and is active (i.e. moving about in the area etc.) then he has to be interfering even if the ball doesn't get to him as he is causing the defending side to change the way they act as a unit.

It's a relative thing as far as the size of the pitch goes. The size of a player compared to the pitch as a hole is tiny where as the size of a Keeper in goal makes a huge difference.
A player (in a off side position) running about in the box is still considered offside if the Ref believes he is distracting an opponent.

Apparently not if he has ran off the field accidentally Marcus. I don't know how anyone can tell if a player has run off field accidentally or on purpose. However, I do recall ebanks blake of Wolves running off pich the ball hit the bar then he ran back on and headed it in for a goal. The opposition appealed for offside but the goal was allowed as he had unintentionally left the field of play well thats what they said on motd anyway.

True. Leads to the question is Danny Graham ever offside as he he is never interfering with play.

True. Like that one of you are fouled/injured yo have to go off until ref says you can come back on that gives the team who committed the foul a man advantage. WTFCK IS THAT ABOUT?

That was originally brought in to stop teams/players taking the piss and feigning injury to stop the opposition going forward or whatever - that rule needs seriously looking at now - Personally - if a player goes down and the ref stops the game then he has to go off the pitch until told to come back on - trainer or no trainer. How many times do you see a player go down when the opposition are in full flow and then he simply gets back up and plays on after the ball is back with the oppo keeper - it'd stop that from happening definitely
