Actually I was interested in whether you meant 5th to 8th place, or 4th to 8th and missed a team out? I suspect it was the former as I doubt you'd ever countenance the possibility of us being in the top 4.
I am also of the same opinion on top 8 but have felt so for about 5 games now. I still put city down as top.... the sloppiness needs to be beat out of them. yaya toure is very sloppy.... arsneal look good now but who knows when the pressure comes on.... chelsea need a striker in january urgently and for me spurs fans are idiots for attacking their own new team... i think personally utd are having their little pick up before it all comes crashing round their ears... I still expect us to not be top 4 but it must be said, 8 matches to half way.... that'll be interesting.

even if we don't get cl football this time round we must get Europa. dont think we will get top 4 sadly but be nice with about 3-5 games left still to be in with a chance of finishing there, as that will show signs of improvement. what was we behind top 4 last season? 20 odd points or so, if we can get within 5 pts, we have something to work on. never know, football is a funny old game, we could win the ****ing league lol.
the fact that even with 3 of the leagues best sides all ****ing up at various points, all 3 are only a few points off the top. Uniteds worst ever start to a PL season = 5 points off top Chelsea and Citys poor starts leave them in a similar position. No team has really capitalised for me, leaving it wide open for the 3 clubs to waltz in and take the top 3 spots. Arsenal for 4th as always.
Ok, I'll bite. When there is an established order, it's natural for people to predict that that order will continue, but it doesn't necessarily do so. It's not set in stone that the top 4 of recent years will remain so. Strength in depth and the financial clout to improve in January should ensure that Chelsea and City overcome their poor start, but there's no guarantee. The fate of Utd is difficult to predict because of the major upheaval of replacing Fergie. Perhaps a better statistical analysis would involve looking at how often and to what extent teams have recovered from poor starts. City have lost 4 games already, the eventual winners rarely lose more than 5 all season. This doesn't mean they can't claw it back, but they do need to pull their finger out soon with their away form.
