I don't know exactly how the IP address thing works, but I think I'm right that it is possible for moderators or others to find out if more than one user is posting from the same IP address. I think this forum would be improved if we all knew who we are talking to, so here's the question: How many people would like to see a list of users that share the same IP address?
forgot I just made a new one called Marlon Kings Sticky Fingers. If i'm gonna get caught I may aswell own up to it first and not look as much of a twat...
If I suspect someone may be posting under more than one name, then I check the IP addresses, but so far I haven't found anyone multi-posting. I can only check IP addresses individually, I can't see them on a list, so it's only practical for me check if I have a suspicion already.
Maybe your right and no one but me does care, but I get the impression from reading threads that other people get irritated too. @ OLM does that mean that you are not suspicious of any users? Also are you saying that in your assessment no one is multi-posting?
So far I have not come across a single instance of multi posting, there have been a few that I was a little suspicious of, but none had the same IP address.
An IP address for a home internet connection will change. With some ISPs it will happen regularly, others it will change on restart of a router and some may stay the same for quite a while. It isn't a very reliable way of identifying multi-posters though.
The odd few I looked at were not even from the same IP when I checked, so unless they were flicking to a mobile dongle or using a proxy, they weren't the same person. Generally the style and content give them away more than numbers. I don't really see it as a massive problem unless someone's sat talking to themselves or building a second profile in anticipation of being banned as a WUM.
