In the early part of the closed season in the summer of 2010 Q.P.R. unveiled a dramatically uninspiring clutch of new signings. Manager Neil Warnock had announced to the world that he was attempting to mount a series assault on the summit of the Championship but his new foot soldiers comprised a knackered left back, a journeyman midfielder with suspect knees, a portly goalkeeper just back from a drugs ban and two strikers whose lack of goal scoring in the previous season had seen their respective employers relegated. This ragtail assortment of journeymen and under performers seemed completely diametrically opposed to Warnockâs proud boast. I was dismayed, what was he doing? ................... Great read Roller. Derry was one of the main reasons that we won promotion, along with Kenny and Adel.
Good read, Roller, and a fitting tribute to mark this latest phase of his career. You should send it to the great man himself and I hope his new fans get a sight of it, too.
Your article just popped into my inbox, and I have to say it's a great read Roller, and bang on the money as usual.
Great read Roller. A fitting tribute to a top man and someone who deserves to be embedded in QPR folklore.
The first article of yours I've read, really enjoyable. Derry has been one of my absolute favourites and should always be remembered as being the lynchpin in our league winning season.
Thanks very much Roller. I really enjoyed the read. Derry will be missed but good luck to him in his new role. I will look out for Notts County's results.
Really good read, as always! Is there any way to email it to Notts County in the hope that he'll read it? I think he's got off twatter.
Nothing new to add, great read Roller and Derry is a true pro. I wish him all the best in his new roll apart from if they ever play us
Well done Roller, an excellent resume of his time with us. He'll always be one of our 'favourite sons'...
Terrific read mate, as has already been said on here be nice for Derry to see this. The epitome of a defensive midfielder.
Unfortunately he didn't get off to the best start today in the FA Cup match against League Two Hartlepool - at least he can now concentrate on getting Notts County off the bottom of League One. Jack Baldwin's goal and two for Luke James secured Hartlepool's path into the second round of the FA Cup and meant Shaun Derry's management career at Notts County started with a defeat. Interview attached:- http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24853118 Shaun Derry: Notts County boss calls on QPR relegation pain Notts County player-manager Shaun Derry says he will use the pain of Premier League relegation with QPR to save the Magpies from a similar fate. The 35-year-old succeeds Chris Kiwomya with the club bottom of League One. And Derry insists his most recent playing experience is ideal grounding for his first managerial job. "I was in a relegated dressing room at QPR and I had my own feeling on how things could have been changed," Derry told BBC Radio Nottingham. "I have to put myself in the the players' shoes. I understand what predicament they are in. "I want to implement my own style of personality on this club. "We have to change the mentality at this football club and once we change that it is unbelievable what can be achieved. "What I want to do is stand there on the side of the pitch and look at a team that works unbelievably hard and represents what I am as a man." Derry admits he has taken on a daunting task at Meadow Lane, and that he only did so with former Carlisle manager Greg Abbott agreeing to join him as his assistant.
Perhaps I'm a bit too sentimental, but for certain ex-R's, like Derry, Ainsworth, Rowlands, Furlong, ****tu, Cook, Mackie, Helguson, etc. I tend to hold an interest in following how they are make out with their new clubs. Even with Ryan Nelsen - normally I would not have much interest in watching Toronto FC play in the MLS, but in the early part of the season, I actually watched a few games, with Ephraim playing too. I also begrudgingly enjoy seeing Remy score goals for Newcastle this season (like winner against Spurs today), and if Taarabt did likewise for Fulham would be following that too - hope he enjoys sitting on Martin Jol's bench (when lucky) and occasionally getting a few minutes of play. I also enjoy following our ex-Spurs loanees Walker & Townsend in their careers. Going back 40 years, the same applied to Rodney Marsh and Stan Bowles after they moved on and ditto for Les Ferdinand etc. Now for other players like Anton Ferdinand, Bosingwa, Cissé, Park, Granero (still ours - injured) etc. I really couldn't care less once they took off the hoops.
