Some good insight from Pat Nevin here. I'm more than tempted to show this to the prat who sits in front of me at home games who constantly moans about 'nobody on the posts'... http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/24857012
The prat who sits nearby you might actually have a point if you look at Nastasics goal last Saturday, if Fer remained on the near post that wouldn't of been a goal.
but that's a case of a player not doing his job properly. that's an individual error - not a system failure. it's a bit like saying we should play with two keepers just in case the first one makes a mistake!* *not a bad idea that
It does point out the need for someone on the near post. Watching the video now Nevins highlighting both Stoke & Spurs who have a lot of powerful players at the back. Chelsea well drilled and confident in the counter attack that's very understandable. I don't think we do a bad joke on corners, defensively it's the zonal layer thing we do which can be our own undoing, we always struggle against the pesky mobile teams defensively.
Was it just my eyes deceiving me, or was that blatantly a Russell Martin own goal? Looked clear as day that it came off Rusty's head to me
i'm more frustrated with our own corners - when was the last time we scored from one? ryan bennett against west brom i think!
Talking of Ryan Bennett I think I would play him alongside Turner tomorrow, Bassong has been a shadow of his former self recently I really rate Bennett myself.
I was wondering when this aspect of it would surface. Hate picking on individuals, but Pilks woeful effort in the Chelsea match cost us quite dearly, as we were looking good for at least a point up until that juncture.
No, true, but defenders push further forward for corners and free kicks and so are out of position should possession be easily lost, which is exactly what happened.
I blame Pilkington for that delivery, left us really open. I wouldn't blame Tettey because he was the only one who made an effort to get back, and he did the best he could considering he was up against Eden Hazard. I think Tettey was largely pretty good at stopping counter-attacks so I would be worried that West Ham raid us on the break without him. I know Snodgrass has not managed to get an assist from a corner this season, even though we had loads against Cardiff but I think he always needs to be on the pitch to take free kicks and corners, and I would like to see us make some use of our set piece chances. OTBC
still, we had at least three opportunities to prevent the goal after the corner. just felt it harsh to lay the blame on a poor corner delivery
I maintain that we should have been awarded a free-kick on the edge of their box as in winning the header against Howson to start the move Hazard blatantly leads with his arm. Had it been Howson going up like that a heading it back into their box it would 100% have been given.
We had a couple of near misses from corners against Cardiff - Howson shooting just wide early on with a first time shot after a well rehearsed short corner and Leroy's far post volley that was cleared off the line. We just need to start to get the rub of the green and some of these will start going in sooner rather than later. I got a real good feeling it could be tomorrow
It did but I think Nastasic claimed it though, either way if Fer kept on the post that wouldn't off been a goal, if it didn't deflect off Rusty then Ruddy what of got it.
Wasn't it Olsson who blazed just wide after that well rehearsed corner Munky ? I may be wrong but I could swear it was Olsson. I think we'll do ok tomorrow but it seems to have 0-0 stamped all over it.
