a best 11 - something to think about

Morning All,

I have given this alot of thought and before anyone berates my selection can I first state that I didnt go to Gillingham regularly until 1988, and this selection is not a list of favourite players but a team of players who have played for Gillingham and who I believe achieved the most in there "whole" career not just there time with the Gills (the only exception being my refusal to include Steve Lomas) who in my opinion never actually played for us.

I am a bit light on Midfielders (Hence Tommy playing on the left) so if anyone has any suggestions please feel free to add them or if you think I have made any glaring omissions.
 
Simeon Jackson must be close seen as he'll be in the prem next season!
& i'm not people like Brent Sancho and Guy Butters went on to achieve much? Possibly Sancho because of the World Cup but he was our player at the time.
 
Thanks for your comments Gillsfan, Sancho I picked purely on the basis that he played 3 matches at the WC finals (whilst being a Gills player), it should be remembered that Ian Cox was in the squad too. It was close between Butters and Breen for a place in my starting 11, but Butters played for Spurs and in an FA cup semi final for Portsmouth (V Liverpool) that I think went to penalties (definitely to a replay). I'll wait and see with Jackson he did well at the end of the season, but we'll see if get many minutes in the premier next season, but he will have some way to go to catch Cascarino who played a 2 world cups and Wallace who won the League with Leeds, or Bailey who once scored (and I think was last person to score) a hat-trick at Old Trafford in the league.
 
Gary Breen (63 appearances for Eire, including the 2002 World Cup) achieved more than Guy Butters, so I'd swap them and put Guy on the bench.
How about Steve Claridge? 817 games for 20 odd clubs is some achievement! Mind you, he did only play one game for us, so I guess he's in the Lomas category.
 
You've forgotten one of the most talented (but unpredictable) wide players we have ever had:: Terry Cochrane, Middlesborough and N.Ireland.
 
Bald eagle, I am sorry but I never saw Mehmet, Cochrane or Shearer play, I know that they were held in great affection by the supporters at the time, and I know that Cochrane played for Middlesborough and was a N. Ireland international, but I am not sure they achieved as much as the players I have chosen, but if you would like Cochrane in the side instead of Tommy Johnson, I would not argue against you.
