Not in the slightest bit bothered about the result in all honesty, biggest disappointment for me was that nobody out there really looked like they could challenge for a first team spot. If we can continue our league form through the xmas period then would be expecting a similar team to be put out in the FA cup regardless of opposition.

I don't think so. Mainly because the FA Cup happens at weekends.

Apologies if it's off topic (then again most of this thread seems to have been), but is there a way of blocking people on here so that you can read a thread with only the sensible posts?
If so, can someone please explain how to do this?

    Cheers,
    Lat

    I couldn't care less that we're out.

I'm pretty certain that Sunderland fan is 15, just ignore him and he'll go away.

The ref was very generous for us tonight, we rode our luck with a few challenges in the box but played more like a team in the second half.
I like the way you play the beautiful game and good luck for the rest of the season. Hope you stuff Hell City at the weekend - if you think Smug is bad just wait till their lot get on here...

Yes, but say we get lucky with the draw and get lower league opposition in the 3rd, 4th and potentially fifth round, then I would hope that a similar team to the one we put out tonight would get through. Then with the QF onwards you generally have to re-arrange a league game to midweek to play the cup game at the weekend, meaning fixture congestion towards the end of the season

Cheers mate, you too. Hope you stay up! I think Poyet is the right man for the job, it's just whether it's too little too late now. I'm certain there are at least 3 worse squads than Sunderland right now!

Yeah, I'd expect us to give it more of a go in the FA Cup, though that's relative...probably still won't be a full side, just a fuller one.

Even had we won today, I doubt that we'd have put out a full squad in the next round, because that tie is happening at the absolute worst possible time, given the December fixture crunch.

Gosh it's got awfully heated round here! Just tuned in listened with 1 ear and was not impressed. As expected we are not the least bit interested in what is considered to be the most minor competition we're involved in. Of course Mp is going to say "we intend to win every game" but you can't tell me that team was selected with sats match as the priority.

As mentioned above its concerning that none of our second string look like good competition but to me it sounds like a team of players who don't really play together. I had got more enthusiastic about the next round, esp as its televised, so am a little disappointed. But not heartbroken. Roll on Sat lets roll over those toigers.

Despite committing twice as many fouls as Sunderland <doh>

Seems the players don't agree with you ........ or do you believe they're concentrating on winning the league?

Haven't read through any of this thread, and judging by the few comments above this one, I don't want to, so someone sum it up for me. Do we now have resounding agreement that Ward-Prowse is simply better than Ramirez? And what proportion of us are annoyed that we didn't play a more ambitious starting XI? Is there lots of moaning? Has this argument between Olly and the Sunderland lad been entertaining or tedious?

A shame we didn't win as we did have a chance to get through tonight, but I'm sure given the choice of league cup and FA Cup I know which one I would prefer to do better in. The fringe players didn't do much but then when 6 starters and 1 sub have not started a premiership game all season it's hardly surprising that the cohesion wasn't good and their match fitness was lacking. (Sunderland had 2) I wouldn't want any main players Boruc, Lovren, Lallana, Lambert, Shaw, Clyne Morgan or Wanyama getting injured so I'm fine with them being rested. But I don't understand why Rowe and Isgrove didn't start as away to Barnsley they were both brilliant and would have added some pace out wide with Rodriguez up front. A shame that all the refs were helping Howard Webb out somewhere in Europe so we were left with the worst premiership ref Lee Mason who really is utterly useless (we must be due 5 dodgy penalties pretty soon). I think we all agree that Gaston and T. Lee were both pretty useless tonight so no wonder we are still meant to be scouting AM like Banega and Cabella. Roll on Saturday :)

That's the thing mate, you don't get a choice, it's down to the luck of the draw and the luck on the day.

You get drawn away in the FA Cup 3rd round and you may well be out before it starts.

I'd rather take the 1/4 finals in this 'mickey mouse' cup than a 3rd round tie at Spurs in the FA.

I knew that we could lose as soon as I saw the starting eleven. I was not surprised as the League Cup is not a priority. I guess Mauricio would have liked to have won, but wasn't afraid to lose. I think we have back up players who are good enough to be slipped in one at a time into the first eleven, but are not good enough (or not experienced enough) to replace the starting eleven. No shame in that as bigger clubs than ours have come unstuck by resting players for Cups.

My son said that it has brought us down to earth...I don't agree...it was just one game and I have not changed my mind about our quality based on a single game where we changed the squad.

To be fair, there were about a dozen players who were in the squad for the Stoke match ........... it wasn't exactly the kids.

We made ten changes .................................. it wasn't exactly the first team. Fran didn't mention "kids" but she did mention backup players. When over 90% of the team is made up of backup players, it's probably fair to say the team wasn't our first choice.
