My argument is the same this year as it was last year. We have a good midfielder who can sit in front of the back 4 and do the mopping up and give the ball simply. Why do we need Gerrard sitting right next to him effectively throwing them both out of their best positions? Last season it was the same when Gerrard and Allen were playing side by side. Rodgers changed that and it helped free up Gerrard, I'm not sure why he's gone back to it this year especially with Lucas fit and us playing 3 centre backs.

I never said he was Dave, but he was a key player for us & when his powers rapidly diminished it was quite sad to witness.

If Rodgers want's to persist with his 3-5-2, then the obvious role for Gerrard is surely that of sweeper........

I think the reason for that is simple mate, Gerrard can't play the AM role anymore, as he's not got enough pace to beat a man & he can't track back effectively enough.

But he can run the game if we allow him the same freedom that Pirlo is given

  6. Surely that's not up to us? Sure, we can play to give him the freedom to play but teams won't take long to see what we're doing and not allow it to happen.

He looked pretty quick when he scored the second goal for England recently.

I don't understand? The only real difference would be not expecting him to perform DM duties

If you gave Gerrard complete freedom to go where he wanted & thus remove any defensive burden from him whatsoever, then you'd never see Coutinho in your side playing as an attacking mid / No. 10, as you couldn't carry 2 players given licence to roam.

He was rubbish that night - however, he is often crap over 90 mins but he can produce a moment of brilliance which changes a game. Some fans may prefer this but I prefer a player who is far more consistent over 90 mins.

Come on Jimmy tell us exactly who this paragon of virtue is who plays for the full 90 mins and achieves more than Gerrard?

He doesn't have to play as AM just not as deep as he has been. Does the centre midfielder not exist anymore? <laugh> The fact is when Coutinho is playing (or Suarez dropping deeper) we can play with Gerrard and Hendo in front of Lucas, let Hendo and the front 3 do the looning around/closing down and the full backs support the attack. The front 3 (or 2 + Cout) are perfectly capable of getting lots of goals. The midfielders can then join the attacks only when needed.

I actually think Hendo is almost perfect to play a role that's either alongside Gerrard or slightly in front. Rodgers wants us winning the ball back early and defenders hate having players like JH buzzing around them. Unfortunately his shooting's bollocks which limits his impact <doh>

The Gerrard of 2013/14 season Dave?

I think you might be relating his contribution to the past, not the present.

As there's plenty of PL midfielders who are way ahead of him this season, in terms of overall contribution.

That makes no sense. Pirlo doesn't roam just anywhere. He sits in the right positions to control the play from the middle. He doesn't have to play too deep nor is he relied upon to force all the attacks. He is the link between defence and attack. Gerrard should be ours.

It'd be a shorter list if you tackled that from the other end.....

From Ozil to Huddlestone, there's umpteen better midfielders than him THIS season.

Billy, the phrase "there's none so blind....." seems most apt.
