Upon hearing on here that we have put an official bid in for Gameiro, I'm wondering if he's the right man to lead the front line. I think it's widely expected that we will go with 1 striker next year and Ben Arfa just behind, so I'm not sure if a player of the Gameiro mould is the right approach. From what I have seen and heard of him, hes a skilful technical player, who would be much more adept at dropping off the front man and picking up the ball in deeper positions. I wonder if a striker with Premier League experience and more suited to our probable formation would be preferable, eg a Defoe who will play right on the last man, or a Crouch who will win headers and hold the ball up for our willing midfield runners.
Also, his lack of Premier League experience is always a worry. I acknowledge it hasn't been a problem for players like Tiote, but we must remember that Enrique, Collocini, Gutierrez etc all struggled when they first came from abroad, so I would think it foolish to rely too heavily on Gameiro.
Perhaps bringing someone from these shores is the way to go, opinions?

Every transfer has an element of risk, but I think he will be a top class player, and people from these shores seem very pricey, so in answer to your question YES he is the right man.....

Sort of player you'd love to see on the team sheet!

I know Pardew's said Ben Arfa will be in behind, but I can't see us playing that all season. Players get injured etc. I would love it if we had a free form attack with HBA, Gameiro and a big player that was actually good at football (I'd love Kalinic, but y'know). Also, as a general rule, French players settle very well

I agree to an extent, i doubt we will get him anyway, dnt wanna get my hopes up too high, but i think we need an out and out stricker who's capable of scoring goals with his feet and headers!
we were exellent with crosses and set pieces last year, majority coming from Andy Carroll, we need a big target man, someone like Huntelaar, has abig presence aswell as having the ability to score. Carrolls assist ratio for us was quite good as well i think last year, manages to bully defenders like Vidic etc, saw glimpses of that in Besty but we'll just have to see, i would mind seeing Best run the front line, i think he's more than capable.

Only time will tell (if it happens). Even great players can struggle for one reason or another (e.g. Kaka at Real Madrid) but others who you think may take time to settle take to it like a duck to water (e.g. Hernandez). If we get him I hope he's a duck. Quack.

Yes I think he is the right person to have. I'm sick of us pumping the ball up to the big man, this should be the plan at the end of a game, when we can make a change and change the game plan. I think it will take him till Xmas to settle in (if he comes).

The problem with buying proven Premiership footballers is that they are so much more money. For a player who is the same ability as Gameiro who currently plays in the Premiership you are going to be looking at a minimum of £18m.

He would fit into a free flowing football team... we would need more pace/support and possibly a strike partner.

If he comes then with Barton, Ben Arfa & Gutierrez in behind I think he has every chance of being a success.

Playing with one striker, you usually want a big target man and I think that Pards still will buy a more traditional front man

Are you dizzy???? I suggest you take a lie down. If we are lucky enough to sign Gameiro, he will do very well in this league. As has been highlighted, French players do well in our league almost instantaneously. Look at HBA before the unfortunate incident involving a certain **** waffle!

I think you're a deluded fellow if you think it's that easy to settle in, there are absolutely no guarantees whatsoever. You also prove you're not the sharpest tool in the shed by using a player with what, 3 appearances under his belt as your evidence.

No matter what brand of football you play, if you play with a lone striker he HAS to be able to hol the ball up. It's all fine and dandy when were in control and are stroking the ball around on the deck but when your on the back foot you've got to hoof it sometimes, and if Gameiro is the only one up there, the ball will just come straigth back. Just getting sick of all the 'if we play good football we dont need a target man' comments.

With a strike partner - yes
As a lone striker - no

EDIT: and I completely agree with the OP. Only problem is players in the PL have ridiculously inflated prices at the moment, especially if they're english *cough*henderson*cough*jones*cough*.
