****ing kick him in the nuts, then in the face when he's down, the disrespectful ****. I've been to the Thiepval Memorial in Picardie, which commemorates the Battle of the Somme. That is an incredible place, it really overwhelms you just how many lives were taken in that one battle alone.

Except three or four people two rows in front of me in E7. Ignores the minute silence/applause and instead discussed who would sit where - and they weren't even their seats! They sat there because the pass holders weren't going so they felt the need to make a big deal out of sitting there during the service. Disgraceful!
Disagree. I don't like this fad of a minutes applause at the best of times. If it's for a specific person and their family request it, then I can go with that. But applause for the millions of young men sent to meaningless deaths in the first world war? I found it crass. It should be a time to remember their sacrifices and a moment to reflect, in silence.
Maybe a bit strong, as I'm sure they meant respect. But I found it insensitive. Can you imagine an applause at the cenotaph?
Applause could be seen as a way of saying "Thank You" to those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Not disagreeing with you in principle, but when thousands of people are already applauding it seems a little churlish not to join in. I think the players and officials were a little unsure at the start and then they also joined in
I was unsure at first why the applause but joined in and I,m 100% sure that the sentiment of honouring/remembering the fallen was just as strong in peoples minds as much as a minute silence would of been.
I agree with you, but with a minutes silence, there is always the chance that some pricks mess it up. They don't have the chance with a minutes applause. I do agree though, in a perfect world, we should reflect on their sacrifice and bravery silently, respectfully.
Shame that it ended up a minutes aplause. Does nobody know how to stay silent and respectful anymore - even for a minute ? Sad days indeed.
I stood and applauded. I would have observed a silence had that happened. The message of appreciation for the bravery and sacrifice for those who have served is just the same and I wouldn't deem collective applause a mark of disrespect. At 11am a week on Monday however I will be silent in remembrance.
I think the applause started to acknowledge the silence and then just spread around the ground. Not what I would want as normal, but it was meant respectfully in my opinion.
I applauded as I feel it is equally respectful as standing in silence. In fact this form of appreciation at foolball games for me is preferred as it seems to deter the mindless idiots that spoil a minutes silence by chanting.

Past experience tells us that boozed up loud mouths on the concourse ruin the silence. Better solid applause than a silence punctuated by a handful of mouthbreathing inadequates who can't hold their ale. Unfortunately. Shame law enforcement focuses on standing or harmless smoke bombs rather than genuinely offensive behaviour such as disrespecting our war dead.
