He didn't have the greatest of seasons last year, every player always has that, but so far this season, and again today, he has shown why he needs to remain our first choice right back. Jenkinson is very good, but no way is he better than Sagna, and no way is he going to be a better replacement than Sagna, Jenkinson's time will come, but it's not now, replacing Sagna with Jenkinson would be a step down. Give him a 2 year contract Wenger, he deserves it.
The thing with Sagna is you wouldn't know he's in his early 30's, really looks like he's at the peak age of his 20's, 26-28, the guy is in great shape and obviously looks after himself, and if you do that in football, it doesn't matter if your 30, you can still perform at the top level.
I have heard some fans on here say Jenks should replace him. One thing with Sagna is that he has no fear, and I could not say the same about Jenks. I just hope we do not lose him on a free as we do not have a ready made replacement.
There have been some pretty erratic views about Sagna on here in the past. Some reckoned he was past it, some thought injuries had slowed him down, I even remember the view that there were at least five better RBs in the PL alone and that we should sell him. He's proved again that he is top class and still able to boss the game and he fully deserves a new contract.
We have seen before that people have no understanding of dips in form even if they have been caused by injury. Play a bad game and the player is condemned as rubbish forever. Sagna had a few rough games last year but has been superb so far this year and back to his form of old. I would love him to be signed for a one or a two year contract, but it may be that he is holding out for something longer.
To be fair to the guy who posted that, Sagna was going through a rough patch at the time (the leg break etc.)
It's a no brainer really. He also has the makings of a very good CB, so even if he starts losing pace and can't no longer play as a RB, we can use him in the middle.
I think he will sign a 2-3 year deal with the intention of playing 1-2 more seasons as a RB before making the transition to back-up CB.
