PETER LAWWELL last night admitted Celtic’s first Champions League qualifier next term could be staged in Ireland or England.
The Parkhead chief executive revealed he’s in consultations with UEFA as his club seek a suitable venue to play their opening home Euro tie in 2014-15.
The Commonwealth Games, which have forced the SFA to move both of this season’s domestic cup finals from Hampden, are also making Celtic look elsewhere for a Champions League venue next July.
Lawwell has confirmed Edinburgh’s Murrayfield is a realistic contender but revealed venues in Ireland and the north of England such as Newcastle’s St James’s Park are also on the agenda.
He said: “We’re actually in discussion with UEFA about what options we have.
“Then, once we’re happy with those options, we go and talk to the relevant owners of the stadiums.
“There are other options, probably less likely, that we’re looking at.”
Lawwell expanded on that when he said: “The Aviva, Croke Park or maybe down south, a northern Premier League club.
“There would be a big support in Dublin.
“The stadium was full there when we played Liverpool in the summer so that would be great and there is a precedent in that we played at Old Trafford against Rapid Vienna.
“We’re developing a few options and then we’ll take it to UEFA and see what they think. I don’t really know until we see the possibilities.
“Murrayfield is a big attraction because it’s near for the supporters, it’s a fantastic stadium and that would be a high contender. I think it would be the only Scottish option.”
Lawwell knows taking the game out of Scotland could price it out of regular fans’ reach and added: “That’s why would be a high contender.
“We need to look at ways of making sure the atmosphere was there and that the game was well attended.
“We’d probably like to make a decision early in the New Year so that we can plan and go for it.”

Ibrox is being used also is it not?

Not sure about Murrayfield, but I would imagine Lawell reckons more money to be made in Ireland

If it means we dont need to play a stupid mid season friendly in Dublin/America/Australia im all for it mind <ok>

Aye, Ibrox is being used but it would still be able to host a football game the pitch will still be there.

Idiots that would get upset about it should just be ignored. It makes sense to me, its nearby big enough and Rangers would be happy to get a few bob.

I think the problem with Ibrox is that nobody knows who owns the place .
Imagine the embarrassment of the two teams , the referee and the crowd
arriving and the doors all locked.

Celtic finally get the courage to ask UEFA for permission to move to Ireland.

Was only a matter of time.

Eric, are you sure that isn't BBC putting their ore in. Its strange how they were
So quick to point out the unsuitability of Dublin as a champions League qualifying
venue for Celtic , yet at the same time been so hesitant in speaking out about
King Dave and him not been a fit and proper person to be Chairman of The Rangers .

I would imagine someone like Lawell had put the question to UEFA before telling the media of this. Whilst the black and white rules may not permit it, I think its likely Lawell knows in advance this will be approved. The game will go wherever Celtic can make the most money as opposed to giving the team the best level of support to make it through to the next round.

Concern here would have to be that football risks becoming a bit like the NFL. Playing regular season games around the globe for money. There was talk a few years back of English football playing 1 game a season abroad for money....i fear this will happen in time
