I was always amused by the idea some people seemed to have that Rafa sat at Melwood with a phone and a cash register.

People are just concerned that if we spend too much on one player, will there be enough money left to invest in other departments that need strenghtening.

But what these people need to understand is that definetly would of been taken into consideration before a bid was tabled.

I think the public know as much about football contracts as they do about music biz contracts.

    Excellent article.
There has been too many articles on this forum as a whole about ''Liverpool were robbed on such and such''.Liverpool paid too much money for such and such,he's only worth this amount''.The same ones were complaining when Liverpool weren't spending money. If other clubs spend similar amounts ''Its great business for such a promising player''.I made this point before that is there an unwritten rule that Liverpool are the only club that aren't allowed to spend money on players? There has been other stuff I have heard it locally too, that ''Kenny never built a team'',''ah he's just a chequebook manager''.I reckon and I'm 100% sure we'll here this if Kenny wins silverware that ''Ah he already had good players''.The same ones that dismissed the players he already had before he signed anyone. They were all rubbish. The same thing happened with Rafa ''Ah he won the CL with Houlliers team''.If Houlliers team and Houllier was so good why didn't he win it with his team?

Very good point, with some people its a lose-lose situation. The best is to state what you have and watch them eat their words.

Do you think Kenny and the owners are that stupid? Do you think they shop like women? "Oh I simply had to have it, and I bought the shoes to match!"???

I made my point and part of it was directing at Liverpool fans. They are unhappy we're spending money, they were the same ones that were unhappy when we weren't.Are they actually ever happy?
My opinion is enjoy the summer, and watch every signing come in.I reckon that its going to be a more enjoyable summer than the last few have been.I do beleive that Kenny will sign players not willy nilly but for positions that do need strengthening.I also believe he's nowhere near finished yet.Okay there will be a few departures. However these departures will be ones that don't fit into his plans. Not players that he in fact wants to keep..again like previous summers. The days of ''sell to buy'' are over.
As for buying players like a women does her shopping. There has been managers that have done that,David O Leary,Roberto Mancini and Mark Hughes spring to mind. However Kenny has never been like that.

That's how I want them to shop. The alternative is, "Dahling, why pay that for it when you can get one in the 2nd hand shop? Okay, it's used and probably not the designer label but it's cheaper!"

As much as Maxi has done well, especially recently, he was a free because the club wouldn't do the womanly thing of simply having to have Mata, whom Rafa wanted.

The women sent a bloke to buy a Gareth Barry and he came home with a Robbie Keane instead. And he spent more than he was supposed to!

The same woman wanted a Dani Alves and he brought home a Philip Degen.
I heard once in the 90s that Roy Evans wanted Leonardo and Parry miss-heard him and signed Leonhardsen.
Or when Houllier wanted Duff and Parry signed Diouf.
Kenny did something similar with Blackburn...He wanted to sign Shearer but instead signed Duncan instead of Alan and he however rectified it.

LOL, Didn't Bobby Robson accidently sign Carl Cort instead of Jason Euell from Wimbledon for Newcastle. The story goes that Wimbledon were short of strikers one week so stuck Euell up front. Robson was impressed so he told his scout (because he wasn't good with names) to put a bid in for the black lad who plays up front for Wimbledon) the following week Wimbledon had Cort availible so they played him up front (With Euell going back in to midfield) so Newcastle stuck a bid in for £7.5m

    Wimbledon bit their hand off

Developing Liverpool required investment, and a strategy, NSV Henry Kenny and Co know what they are doing I think, Henry is the millionaire not the overly opinionated fans

There has been far too much financial debate from people doing nothing like the job these people are doing, all very sure opinions too, numptyism:)

A little insight into FSG from an article last December on the Sox signing Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez on 7-year deals. (Extraneous info edited out.)

Boston Red Sox manager Terry Francona called left fielder Carl Crawford a game-changer. Turns out he might have been guilty of understatement.

Between the multitalented Crawford, who a source confirmed came to terms Wednesday night on a seven-year, $142 million deal with Boston, and slugging first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, acquired by trade last weekend from San Diego and in line for his own seven-year deal for an estimated $154 million, the Red Sox appear set for the next decade.

    [snip]

Crawford also becomes the first Red Sox player since John W. Henry and Tom Werner purchased the team in 2002 to be given a contract of seven years. General manager Theo Epstein evidently made a persuasive case to Henry late in the process to do so.

"When things come together the way we hope and expect, we'll be real satisfied," Epstein said Thursday. "You go into every winter with a Plan A, and sometimes it's hard to pull that off, then you move on to Plan B and C.

"Adding an impact player was very important to where we were for the short and long term, and adding two - as long as they were the right players for the right spots in the right situation - would be even better."

    [snip]

While the Red Sox remained involved with Crawford, they also explored other options for a left fielder, preferably one who batted right-handed. As late as early Wednesday evening, a team source with direct knowledge of negotiations was pessimistic about Boston's chances of signing Crawford.

"The market is getting too crazy," he said, anticipating that the Angels were preparing to make an eight-year offer for the 29-year-old outfielder, a four-time All-Star and a winner in 2010 of his first Gold Glove.

But Epstein called Red Sox owners Tom Werner and John W. Henry in Liverpool on Wednesday night to make a passionate case for upping the offer to Crawford.

Werner listened first, expressed his reservations about adding a seventh year to the team's offer, then advised Epstein to make his pitch to Henry.

Henry, who had a few reservations of his own, gave Epstein the green light.

"That shows you,'' Werner said Thursday, "what kind of faith we have in Theo.''
