ok...I am new to this but here goes...for the last 2 seasons we have changed from our used to be successful 4-4-2 to a 4-3-3/4-5-1 and a 4-2-3-1 meaning we only use one of our quality strikers, therefore at least 2 players will play out of position as we do not have any natural wingers. Our best team that started last season looked something like this:
    Szczesny
    Sagna Djourou Koscielny Clichy
    Song Wilshere
    Walcott Fabregas Nasri
    van Persie

now by using this system we will always play 2 players out of their best/favoured positions (Walcott & Nasri)
I believe a tactic that could benefit the players we have could be a 4-1-2-1-2, plus going back to using 2 strikers would probably be more effective than having one as teams have found a way to counter that tactic. This is what the team would look like if we used this formation...

    Szczesny
    Sagna Djourou Koscielny Clichy
    Song
    Fabregas Wilshere
    Nasri
    van Persie Walcott

Basically, unlike the diamond formation england use which means the 2 in the middle are usually in wider positions, they will stay central where they are comfortable and our full backs will provide the width - obviously there will need to be work done on their crossing abilities. Song will do what he does best by being an anchor man, not roaming about like this season as he has become a liability at times. Fabregas and Wilshere will do what they do best. This then leaves Nasri to play behind the 2 strikers where he has stated his favourite position is and he could be given a free role in a way where he could roam about and draw the opposition defenders out of position. This then leaves van Persie to play in his favoured position as I believe he plays best with another striker who can benefit from his creativity. Finally, I am a big Walcott fan and believe he should be used as a striker and in the 10-11 season we have seen what he is capable of - making runs in behind the defence and scoring goals. When used out wide he is not as effective and even though he did well from this position he will benefit more from playing upfront with another forward.

Appreciate all of your comments! <ok>

    Change in formation. Yes definitely.

    I'd go 4 - 5 - 3. This would give us a massive advantage.

Not like me to stick up for a Goon but cut the lad some slack - he came on here to debate not get shot-down with a stupid remark from one of 'his own'.

the big problem is a lack of width. i appreciate what you're saying about the fullbacks providing it, but this formation leaves you very open to the counter-attack if the opposition have fast wingers - they essentially get a straight run at your CB's if your fullbacks are pushed up.

chelsea deployed this at the start of the season very effectively, it relies on the two forwards using the channels very effectively, something that anelka and drogba can do. alarmingly - something that bendtner can do very well. however, not something i think van persie is a big fan of.

Fair enough - Meant to be amusing...

We'd lack in width (even with the full-backs) and all the opposition would need to do, would be to keep their fullbacks tucked in. This would make the defence more crowded than normal and harder to break down. We've seen examples of this numerous times unfortunately.

Personally, I think we need to go 4-4-2 like before with VP playing behind a decent striker and Walcott and another wide player (Pires like player) coming in from the left.

Yeah I would like us to play a 4-4-1-1 at home and a 4-2-3-1 away.

My hypothetical team formations with hypotheticall transfers.

    Home:

    ----------------Steklenburg-----------------
    Sagna----Cahill--------Vermaelen----Clichy
    Walcott-----Fabregas----Wilshere----Nasri
    -----------VanPersie
    -----------------Benzema

    Away:

    -----------------Steklenburg-------------------
    Sagna----Cahill--------Vermaelen----Clichy
    ----------Song-------Wilshere---------------
    Nasri------------Fabregas-----------VanPersie
    ----------------Benzema--------------------

I'm sorry, but 1)`I don't htink stekelenburg is good enough, szczesny and fabianski before his injury are better. I would keep these two and rotate them as goalkeepers so that they both get plenty of action until szczesny is ready to be number 1 full time. apart from that I like your team the bear

    I did forget to mention that when defending we could go back to 4-4-2 with RVP dropping into the hole;
    back 5
    Wilshere Fabregas Song Nasri
    van Persie
    Walcott

I think more of a system change, rather than a formation change would be better
stick with the 4-3-3/4-2-3-1 or which ever
have song STAY BACK, and the 2 CBs push out wide to cover clichy/sagna while there attacking so when we've got the ball and are on a full on attack we'd look something like....

    ------------sznenky
    Djourou----------Song-----------TV
    ======================
    ----------------------
    -------------Fabregas
    --------Walcott----Wilshere----Nasri
    Sagna-------RVP--------------------Clichy

then when we don't have the ball and we're defending...

    ------------szneznkyy
    Sagna-----Djourou---TV----Clichy
    Nasri--Fabregas--Song------Wilshere
    ----------RVP
    Walcott
