I know it has nothing to do with picking an England team, but a lot of neutrals enjoyed Rickie's story and his sheer joy in an England call up. Didn't hurt to score the winning goal against Scotland either :) Even the England poster used to advertise the next game had a photo of Rickie and exhorted fans to come where the joy was.

There will be a lot of water under the bridge before the squad is chosen, but at this moment Rickie should go. He does bring a physicality and intelligence to the team. He would probably not start (unless Rooney was unavailable) but would be a great impact player if we needed a late goal.

    Plus he's a guaranteed 1-0 in a penalty shoot-out. Clincher..? :)

I have nightmares about him missing a penalty for England.

This was the Dail Mail's 2007 prediction for what the 2014 team would look like....

That shows how you can't predict how youngsters will turn out. Some just aren't hungry enough.

I think this is a little biased. I genuinely think Carroll is one of the best (attacking) headers of the ball there is, and this is his clear strength, and I think he's definitely better than Lambert in the air. He is not a very rounded player as his general technique and link up play seems fairly poor, which is where Lambert excels, as well as having a good arial presence.

I honestly think that people just select Carroll on reputation....we haven't seen much from him recently. People who don't watch all the teams in the PL and just watch their own, select Carroll in a knee jerk way. Lambert is a better player than Carroll...end of!

Slightly off-topic, but I see Spain have finally clinched Diego Costa's eligibility. I think all bets are off on who will win the world cup now.

Not really. I still think Brazil and Germany have a great chance of winning it. Costa isn't that good to dismiss other countries who are very capable of winning it.

Tongue firmly in cheek there. Spain's real problem is some of the ageing stars like Xavi who seem to be in decline, but they still have an embarrassment of riches to call on and Costa is an incredible player. Real coup for them.

There was that video the other day, where he feigned an injury, but does he ever actually play nowadays..? Serious question. :)

Don't think so, he was an unused sub against Chelsea.

I honestly didn't think he got that near to playing these days. Felt like he was the forgotten footballer of his generation.
