Morning all from a breezy and damp rural France. Up in the north west the storm hit Brittany and Normandy overnight with 30,000 homes this morning without electricity. Many ex-pats live up there because it is easy to get back to the UK to re-stock supplies of baked beans, but the weather is very similar to south west England, but even wetter. Living well south of the Loire river we have a different climate, but probably more thunder storms when the temperature rises. Most of the small towns and villages still have overhead electricity supplies, although some effort is being put into changing that. Cables are being put in conduit then buried in ditches. Should be interesting when the council come round to clean the ditches out.
Morning all from a bright and breezy bandit country. Wind got up in the night and few things have been blown about the garden, but it's getting quiet now. Just heard on the news that a man was killed in his car when it was crushed by a tree in The Lower High St, Watford - sad news. Just waiting for First Capital Punishment to restart services on the Bedpan line so we can be sure to get the train to the game this afternoon. No trains at the moment!
Morning all Not so bad here as expected. It's breezy but no sign in the immediate area of fallen trees and we've actually had a sunny morning. It sounds as though it was much worse on the Isle of Wight which is not a massive distance from here. Both Mrs H and I have gone down with a chest infection so will not be straying far from the sofa today.

Earlier this year I was off on the bread run, only to find that a large tree had come down and completely blocked the road. As it came down it brought electricity cables and supporting poles with it. Just as I arrived so did the local fire brigade. Out came the chain saw and within five minutes the road had been cleared of the tree. The electricity cable was still hanging across the road, but with the aid of some twine it was pulled back and fastened to a still standing tree. A few days later the EDF men turned up and reinstated the poles and cables. I was held up for 10-15 minutes at the most, so why does it take so long to clear felled trees over there?
Why are we so bad at weather AK - well we don't use our common sense and try and do things like normal like go to work instead of staying at home until it's practical and safe to do so. On the news this morning some folk were interviewed standing on the platform waiting for a non existent train saying they were unaware of the storm and its effects! We had a tree down on our estate road a few years back. I changed and got me saw and by the time I got back, some neighbours had already dealt with it. Sometimes we should not expect others to deal with problems, at least not immediately. I do feel for the linesmen though who have to go out and fix all the lines. Looking at the weather chart, Holland & Belgium should be getting whacked, the isobars were virtually joined up and we know how flat it is over there. Hope it's not too bad.
Still no trains and my car is still in the garage in MK - looks like £60 down the ****ter! Eldest son is a linesmen and he has not been that busy overnight...
Because, as reported in the Irish press, there are only 'tree fellers' employed to do the job in the whole of England?
