Feeling pretty good here, I'll be setting off soon to get the Metro to Sunderland. I'll be meeting up with Syd, the former Supermod and having a pint or two with him.

    HTL.

IT'S a tale of two rival cities and the age-old debate that keeps the mud slinging on Tyne and Wear. Just who are better – Geordies or Mackems?

A new book examines the ancient horn-locking between the cities of Newcastle and Sunderland.

Penned and researched during lively trips to the North East by author Ian Black, he sought out jokes and sayings used as ammunition back and forth between the Rivers Tyne and Wear.

Ian is a well-known author, playwright, journalist and broadcaster with an eye for sensing local tensions. He has written bestsellers which explore established rivalries, including Scotland vs England, Weegies vs Edinbuggers and Mancs vs Scousers.

But he says the relationship between the people of Tyneside and Wearside, just a few miles apart, is among the most fierce he has found.

“In the book you’ll find the reasons why a Geordie would rather take Osama Bin Laden home for tea than someone from Sunderland,” he said.

“The rivalry between the two cities is legendary and one of the most long-standing in Britain.

“A lot of the tension is obviously down to the football, and I think a lot of it is good-humoured and light-hearted, but it’s certainly there.

“I’ve seen intense rivalry between places like Glasgow, my home city, and Edinburgh and Liverpool and Manchester but the Geordies and Mackems seem to really revel in it.”

    And Ian’s personal favourite city?

“I’d say without hesitation it would have to be Newcastle,” he said. “The friendliness is incredible. You stand in the city looking at a map and someone will come up to you and help. But they won’t just give you some vague directions. They’ll actually take you there.

“Last time I was down I was hanging about outside St James’s Park and a Geordie offered to take me in. That sort of thing happens all the time. Geordies are so open and they will do anything for you. I would go for Newcastle every time.”
