Flyer, I'm no lover of the yanks, quite the opposite in fact but I have to point out that when we bombed Port Stanley with a Vulcan bomber to deny the Argentinian air force the use of it, it was done with fuel resupply's from U.S.A.F tankers I believe. It may not sound like much but look at what the Argentinian Air force did to our ships. If they had had the use Stanley Airfield rather than just their mainland bases, the task force would have been hit far worse and the landings may never have happened. I totally agree with your sentiment though.

America has always been a very immature country and its getting to the point where the rest of the world has had enough. i heard that asian countries are now talking about creating a currency similar to the euro because they believe the american dollar is too unstable. their pollutions are too stupid to see outside their little worlds. as for the spying on me no they should not be doing it. i have never believed if i haven't nothing to hide i will be fine. i think if you do think that then you are pretty stupid. good like to people like wikileaks

Are you seriously suggesting Angela Merkel could one day become a threat to the good ol' US of A ??

It's quite frankly absurd and a case of them spying on her 'cos they can'.

I'm not disagreeing with you mate.
However, all the major powers have been spying on each other for centuries. The yanks will be mightily pissed off at getting caught red-handed though.
It's fake outrage from Meercat etc though, as they are all as bad as each other.

I'm not too worried about this, as I don't believe any of these "goings on" has had, or will have, any impact on my life whatsoever. I actually find the world of spies quite fascinating!!

This is true from what I've heard also, the thing was, we didn't need that much help, the arggies were running out of the exocet missiles which was their trump card. They were trying to buy some more at which point a couple of Mi6 donned a french accent and pretended to be the supplier. The Arggies fell for it hook line and sinker. They were kept waiting for a delivery that never arrived.

Interesting thread. I'm leaning towards the Col end of the spectrum. I find Nines' description of part of the system actually quite reassuring, if there is a concern it is the human factor. I know I am on the 'list' of a couple of countries because of questions I get at immigration at one and problems getting a visa for the other. I know why and its fine by me if they want to waste time and resources (nothing exciting or illegal by the way), just a little inconvenient sometimes.

Its right to be concerned about this stuff, and we should be attentive and speak out, with perspective. Some of the responses on here are knee jerk polarization from the conspiracy theorist tendency, no debate/ dialogue encouraged. Privacy is important but how do you balance it against safety and security? Spying on 'allies' would have been very useful when British secret services were an offshoot of the KGB, so I'm not surprised that happens at all.

As an individual I can't spend my time worrying about this stuff too much, that way paranoia lies. If someone is spying on me they will find something they could try and blackmail me with, but why would they bother unless I was a threat in some way?

As usual this thread has drifted into routine anti-Americanism. It seems to be some badge of honour for some to say 'trust me I hate the Americans too'. If you hate Americans, you have a problem, hating the American government is another question. I have problems with the leadership of many countries - China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, sometimes USA, UK....but no problem with the people of these countries, they are just like us. If I am going to waste my time worrying about anything it will be the economic and increasingly technological grip China has on the rest of the world and the complete absence of human values of its government.

She's an East German by birth. Could be a deep undercover mole Stainsey. Come on mate you're the conspiracy theorist, use your imagination. Everyone's a threat if you are paranoid enough.

Hence my comment about oxymorons in my OP, Turkish.

It is, however, a little glib as remarks go. It would not surprise me to learn that the US has the most brilliant minds with the most brilliant technology to undertake covert operations and surveillance.

The anti-American sentiment expressed in this thread is, in my opinion, more a wish that our government was seen to better act in our interests than in the interests of our cousins over the pond. It may be that they do and that better PR is needed instead.

You're correct. Flyer's ramblings about international events are almost as deranged as his football ones.

That the US is spying on everybody hardly comes as a surprise and doesn't really bother me too much - I'm sure that surveillance has prevented many terrorist actions around the world. What does bother me is that anyone that reveals the extent of the spying is treated like a traitor, rather than the hero that they are.

Terrorism is not a world threat. its all an excuse to invade everyones privacy.

They yanks have killed hundreds of thousands (perhaps even going into millions) of innocents in the last 10 years, who are the real terrorists in the world?

I am fairly relaxed about invasions of privacy, Flyer, but not about invasions of countries - as carried out by the US with our backing.
