We are a much bigger club than our position in the league suggests, not a huge club but we are deserving of a lot better than we have seen. However, our current playing squad is not up to the standard it should be if we are all honest, but that could change in January (i am 99.9% certain it will not but you never know) or maybe next season if the board make up their mind and either lower the price or put some cash in again before selling. I would say a League One squad with a lot of youngsters who had not been played at this level or even close to it before now are doing just about ok.

We are far from punching above our weight, but we cannot seriously be too surprised to see the team we have down the bottom end of the table especially with our best players missing. We saw how bad Millwall were with their best side out and even with the worst performance i have seen us put in for a very long time we only lost 1-0 to a lucky deflected shot. Blackburn away is a very difficult fixture, add to that the fact it is an absolute hole i am very happy to have come away from that with 3 points. If we can pick up the points against Wigan and put a good performance in as well, i think we will see us go on a decent run which could turn our season around.

We just have to wait and see

Lets hope the contract has just been misplaced under the La Liga players contract offers etc. The long term goal of growing home talent and seeing success of that is very admirable but it definitely is not something which will come to fruition anytime soon. To be in the upper of the Championship surely we must buy a few bit's n pieces...

Before I add my two-penn'orth on Sir Chris' contract, please remind me which valuable players' contracts are due to run out this season. By "valuable" I mean a player for whom we could get a fee greater than (say) quarter-million pounds.

Before you do have your say on Powell's contract, can I quickly run down to Ladbrokes and have £500 on predicting your exact words ?

Yes, thanks, that is all I could think of.

OK, maybe when Chris persuaded these players to sign for Charlton he made personal commitments to them. And maybe he now feels obligated not to sign a new contract until they have done so also, or at least have been made fair offers. Same for Alex Dyer and any other staff he persuaded to join him here.

Kind of like the skipper not leaving the ship until all the crew are safely off or like the US Marines never leaving a man behind (allegedly). A matter of honour.

According to today's press, Tony Pulis is unsure whether to take the Palace job. He would be absolutely ideal for us, IMO. Proven record at every club he has been at, and can galvanise a rag tag and bobtail squad to safety this season. I wonder if Slater can divert a portion of that £1m a month he is putting in  towards getting Pulis.

Imagine the electric effect it would have on a sold out Valley this Sunday when Tony Pulis runs out of that tunnel with 27,000 adoring Addicks cheering his name.

His brand of football was far from popular with Stoke fans.

...although Stoke fans seemed to enjoy the 6/7 seasons of Premier League football that Pulis attained for them....

Pulis was popular at Gillingham, and had some success at Stoke. Can't see him wanting to add a relegation to his CV by taking the Palace job, where, unlike at Charlton, there actually is a vacancy.

Vol, you've said before that a large part of the reason why attendances have been dropping at The Valley is that the football we've been playing under Powell is poor. How exactly would appointing Pulis change that?

As it happens, I think he is a decent manager who did a tremendous job at Stoke. But there I think he managed to cultivate an 'Us against the world' mentality, whereby Stoke fans adopted the Millwall slogan 'No-one likes our style of football, we don't care'. I don't think that would work at Charlton.

If your suggestion of getting Pulis in before Saturday was serious, after we have just managed a terrific win at Blackburn, and indeed shown signs of improvement in the past 3 games, then it shows how irrational your anti-Powell position is IMO.
