And yet even if some of those flares were not cool the stadium was not set alight, no one was incinerated, no one panicked and was trampled and no one suffered from the ill effects of smoke inhalation, all ofwhich we are informed are possiblities if not certainties. when just one smoke bomb ismlet off at a City game. And this in a stadium where they serve beer on the terraces from mobile dispensers, while in this country stepping over the yellow lines on the concourses by an inch whilst holding a plastic container with beer in can lead to ejection and the intervention of the police. And large flags don't seem to cause the problems there they do here.Seems the one thing we are in front Europe in of is restricting people and stopping people showing any emotion. And not just at footballthanks to armies of health and safety officers looking for something to justify their jobs and pensions and other council jobsworths.
Of course the main factor in an atmosphere is the crowd noise but these things help to add to the whole occasion.
Unfortunately we will never see it as it won't be allowed and so we will never see an area like that for those who want it leaving the others to sit with in peace and quiet . In any case too many of our fans think that supporting your team consists of sitting down politely applauding so as to not disturb anyone we will never have the numbers to make it work and look impressive.

You won't get that with our lot. You may get one reporting you to a steward as you are spoiling their view but that is as animated as some will get. Until unreserved seating is an option and people who treat football matches like a visit to the theatre are not mixed together it will be the case. It is worth noting safe standing areas in Germany have a reserved number but that doesn't matter as everyone who goes in there wants to join in. No doubt we would still have people opting to go in there and then moaning their enjoyment of the game was being spoilt by all these people chanting and making a lot of noise.

Agreed. The atmosphere at the Lane has gone downhill over the years too, although some set up an initiative to stop the decline. It's called the 1882 movement, after our founding year, and involves getting large crowds to youth games and encouraging fans who want to stand and sign all game to buy tickets in the same blocks of the ground for first team matches. It hasn't changed the atmosphere that dramatically at first team games but I've been to under 21 games when they've been there and it's fantastic, loads of the youngsters have songs and they love it.

Sorry, but you'll need to cruise elsewhere, he's not your type. Besides Reggie would get jealous if you took it from anyone else.

It's a shame CI is dieing off slowly and we end up with their detritus.

CI is alive and well and is doing exactly what it always did, having grumpy middle aged passionate fans talking to each other.

I've got no problem with risk assessment. And safety officers, as long as it all has structure and purpose; there would have been many more tragedies. In this country without them. I also believe that there needs to be the reins of control that can develop initiatives through the walk, canter and trot to the full bloodied gallop - or rein it in before someone gets hurt. A million flares and smoke bombs will not make enough atmosphere worthy of putting anyones life at risk. When I watched those videos, it was clear that some of those terraces were virtually no-go zones; my personal belief, although I cannot substantiate it, is that the majority of real football supporters would not want that, as it would draw in the tribal hooligans who would use football to serve their own violent, abusive agenda.
How many times have you seen the real 'atmosphere makers' ranting and chanting and looking anywhere other than where the football is being played? There has to be a middle ground, or it will all go pear-shaped.

    Interesting.

The passion, raucous noise, the electric atmosphere, the full stadia is what draws so many new fans into football. They see it on tv and want a piece of the action. Not many get sucked in by the charming Leitch listed building stand at Fulham.

Granted no one wants to be knifed, battered or crushed to death, but your vision of an orderly polite stadium is what currently ails the game in this country and beyond. It is sucking the soul out of our sport.

The silverware helped, but this atmosphere is what made Liverpool appealing to so many outside that city.
