Wenger was shown up tactically tonight. Giroud was out of the game by 75mins, at which point Arsenal had made only 1 substitution. If Bendtner & Gnabry had come on then, their pace would have made Dortmund drop deeper, and opened up more space, plus provided width with Gnanbry & Cazorla playing wider.

Instead, tired legs & over-committed fullbacks due to the tendency for Wilshere to come inside left Sagna stranded upfield and Gibbs out of position, not tracking his man, and Lewandowski scores the winner.

Personally I think the substitutions & tactics in the final 20mins were very poot tonight & cost the team a draw at least.

Honestly, only the truly insane could believe that their superficial armchair management held any merit whatsoever.

Yet we're top and lost because of a lucky break in a half where they only had 1 shot.

Think so, but not sure if it's an injury that keeps him out for Saturday, though I wouldn't start him Saturday, give him a weeks rest.

More fantastic and insightful posting from the forums whipping boy. The way you debated each point & highlighted its flaws really opened my eyes. No wonder you're on so many peoples Ignore Lists - you add absolutely nothing of value to this forum.

If Santi's shot that hit the bar had gone in then we would have defended our lead and probably won the game, so saying Wenger got his tactics wrong is easy to say in hindsight, but I would have liked to see some more wing play as their fullbacks are beatable. This was a game in which Walcott would have excelled.

We could have dropped deeper later in the game and played for a draw, but that would have invited pressure and we could have conceded that way - people then would be saying we were attacking well and shouldn't have invited the pressure and got the tactics wrong in that scenario too. It's a fine line between winning and losing sometimes and to be honest last night was down to two individual mistakes that cost us the game, not the tactics.

Thank you for taking the time to write a thought-out and articulated response PISKIE. It's great that some members can do it. I'll refer people to the Match Day Thread as this is off-topic for this one and continue there.

We lacked width but Ganbry is not experienced enough for this kind of game. For me starting an 18 year old with soo little experience against a team like Dortmund would be tactical suicide.

I think Wenger pretty much got his selection right (considering what we had available).

55% posession against one of Europe's best passing teams. We could easily have won this game and a draw would have been a fair result. But this can happen in Europe.

Make a mistake and you get punished. We didnt play badly at all.

He said he'd be fine. I'd start Serge v. Palace abd bring Jack back for the deep role v . Chavski

Why would I debate the points when I honestly believe that we aren't qualified to make those kind of tactical analyses, either from an ability point of view, or based on the information Wenger has on and from the players.

It seems ridiculous when (some of) the washed up players do it on the TV, but when some anonymous person on the Internet does it, particularly one who criticises Wenger for anything and everything, it is a bit difficult to believe that it is going to be in any way insightful.

The problem with debating your points is that like always, they are merely judgement calls. Perhaps Wenger made an error of judgement, but we will never know. Your posts always start from a loss or a result and then say "IF Wenger had..." as if you know exactly what would have happened in that alternate reality, based on the (purely negative) benefits of hindsight.

If he had brought Bendtner and Gnabry on earlier and we had shipped a goal just the same, I have not the slightest bit of doubt that you would be posting that Wenger had lost it for such a bonehead substitution.

Not saying "Gosh, What a great substitution that was. I agreed with it wholeheartedly. I've always admired Bendtner's talents and he usually can be relied upon to score a goal. I was so wrong!"

I give up. I've encouraged debate and been told we're not qualified even to speculate. Brilliant.

I praise when praise is due - like the signings of Ozil, and Flamini, and the excellent development of Ramsey, dropping Chesney which sparked good form, the formation and belief in the Kos / Mert partnership, the excellent development of Jenks, and now Gibbs, the signing of the young talent to long contracts, the incredible development of Giroud.

I also criticise when I see things I disagree with - like when your striker is clearly flagging and you have a hungry one on the bench who can run the channels and provide an outlet.

But I see, as usual, there will be no sense from you. And so, as so many others have done, I'll give up & Ignore you from now on. Maybe eventually you'll get the message.
