I must say the way Matt shapes up to head a ball and the verocity ande direction he gets behind reminds me so much of the Great John Charles I know this should cause great debate but this lad has what it takes and his head is well and truly screwed on Im looking forward to seeing him bang many goals in for us
Leeds60, I think you might be getting ahead of yourself as far as Smith goes. My all time hero is John Charles and it would take a lot of consistent performances from Smith to be considered in the same article. Come back after 50 plus goals from Smith and I might even think about it.
A certain Jack Charlton also springs to mind when the order of the day was the leather ball with laces. Dont think a modern day footballer would head one of those things or theyd be hospitalised with concussion. I was impressed with what Smith did with his feet on Sunday as much as his heading. Took first goal and disallowed goal brilliantly
Never mind John Charles, Smith is nowhere near the quality of Mark Viduka either, who was great in the air as well as on the ground, the perfect foil for someone like McCormack.
Have to totally disagree with the opening statement, the guy rarely jumps six inches off the ground, I am quite shocked you really believe so Leeds60.
Didn't win any against ****tu - he even tried to flick on a throw in and headed it in the opposite direction and out for a throw-in to us As for his movement - he made ****tu look as fast as Bolt - he's slow, clumsy and just plain awful!!
Finished watching the second half and I can confidently say I stand by my original decision that I don't believe Smith will get into double figures of goals scored in a season. His headed goal yesterday was a case of it being pin point passed directly onto his head, he only needed to extend his neck an inch
Can you seriously think of a better cross from a player in recent years, phenomenal cross by young Mowatt there. Also, Smith has already got 4 goals and is our second top goalscorer, hardly been first team either. I don't think it'd be a big ask for him to get another 6 so I think double figures is more than achievable for him, I definitely wouldn't be happy with us relying on him though.
Gordon McQueen was as good a header of a ball you will see, in his day was classed as best centre half in Europe. But lets give the lad a chance and see what he can produce.
