I think the other one is Kusczak. On the Utd website it said Sunderland were willing to pay £16 million for all three. I think we were originally going to swap them for Henderson, but he ended up going to Liverpool instead.
to be fair I think it shows fergies statement of intent. If he is willing to shed £17m on a player whose position you don't really need to fill then he will be wiling to spend for the positions that you do need to fill. In other news, I heard you're in the market for a goalkeeper. We'll do you Brad Jones, He counts as homegrown so will be a snip at £14m
the latest name being put through the fence is defour. todays been crazy, it's almost like transfer deadline day!!
Yeah you must be happy with that. Covers the Jones fee with 3 reserves so you can spend what cash the Glazers are willing to pump in on that midfield Best of luck from the Canaries.
wait and see how well anderson does next season before you write him off. if he stays free from injury,he'll prove critics like you wrong.
I didn't "write him off".... He has a part to play, but I just don't think he's ready to be our first choice Centre midfielder for a season. I take it you're happy with our midfield then?
Phil Jones is quality, I have watched him several times and thought he was impressive against us and Chelski. He is worth 15-17 million because of the quality he is already producing at 19 years of age. I also found it strange when we payed 10 million for Smalling but that has turned out brilliantly. I TRUST FERGIE.
now that i think about it..i think we were looking to sign jones next summer, but the interest of liverpool and arsenal has forced our hand to bring it forward a year earlier. similar to what happened with rooney and newcastles interest in him.
This is exactly what I thought too. I said this on the 'Pool board earlier.... In effect we've managed to get the money back for his transfer too - thanks to Sunderland.. So I don't think this transfer should prevent Fergie from bringing in that Centre Mid we need... I doubt that this signing was well and truly in this summers plans until now. But provided we do some more deals i'm happy. Very good intent shown so far. Nice and early too.
However according to the scrot on the Liverpool board who spouts crap and won't actually answer any questions to back up his claims, United simpy see who Dagleish wants then jump in and try and sign them. TIT
Bit much guys? Surely, £17m is a bit much. It's the English tag, if a player is English, you can add 5-10m straight away onto their price tag, and 15-20m if some has been talking about the player for a few weeks as in the case of Carroll. Liverpool fans attacked me for these kinda comments, slightly unfairly I reckon, as it's just a simple observation. £17m IS alot of money for a defender, regardless of who they are
the markets out of control, especially english players.i imagine its the best we could do for a gifted young english defender.
I feel a ridiculous transfer window again. How long before city decides to get in on the act. Going to be another £100m+ window from them I reckon, regardless of what they say
I'd be happier for them to go crazy and buy uneeded, egotistical "superstar" players... They already have a good squad and only really need about three players to make a real challenge. They have the capability to get carried away and be their own downfall this summer. But, regardless of what City do, this is gonna be the Biggest summer in the history of English Football.
Indeed, I do hope city screw up, they stole our CL spot We didn't deserve it, we lost against too many bottom teams
If we're going to spend £17m on a young English defender surely Rodwell, Shawcross or Cahill are better options. I can only assume he's being brought in as a replacement for Brown / Evans (who should be sold). This transfer market is bloody ridiculous though, £20m for Henderson, £17m for Jones (both promising but unproven players)?!?!?! Considering Pique went to Barca for £6m a few years ago and he's now one of the best defenders in the world! I blame City and Madrid - both ruining the game by spending silly money on players.
The circumstances for Pique's transfer were different though, similar to Ozil's transfer to Madrid, and Van Der Vaart's to Spurs. Cahill is a player who only wants immedate first team football, Shawcross likewise, and Rodwell is a midfielder by trade (he's certainely not a better defender than Jones) Jones' age is what stands him out - for his age (19) he's already a good centreback. He could probably get into Villa or Everton's first team already. Jones also plays alongside Smalling for the U21s, and will be content to watch and learn like Smalling has. It seems we should be recouperating the money anyway. Good allround move to me. At least, if all goes to plan, we shouldn't be scrambling about once Vidic gets old like we have been for Scholes' replacement. We're thinking years in advance. Rooney wasn't exactly proven when we bought him for all that cash... £20 million now isn't the same as £20 million 5 or 10 years ago.
Liverpool fans know that to a certain degree we over paid for Carroll but it was due to the timing of Torres transfer request coupled with the fact that we'd have signed Carroll this summer anyway. I reckon you got the short end of the stick because we are constantly being told about how we got fleeced for Carroll even though he has a better strike rate then Torres when Torres was his age and a better strike rate then Torres this season even though he spent a large portion of it injured and in a mid table team AND a better strike rate then Torres since January and Chelsea paid £50m for Torres in a move which was seen by many (at the time of the transfer) as a good bit of business by Roman. Alas this isn't a post for this forum. Sorry United fans
