With all the arguments and conjecture for the guilty/not guilty what will be the outcome? will the situation drag on forever maybe popping its head up every once in a while? or can anyone envisage a rapid development that leads to a prosecution?

Some valid points regarding the costing of this investigation will eventually have to be considered -

Does anyone think it that the benefit to Portugal would be closure to a itch than cannot scratch- a positive redeeming reflection on their policing -? ( if the was the McCanns found to be guilty)

The fickle media I reckon would turn against them regardless of what they have printed about them in the past.

As to the verdict- again if the McCanns are charged - what I have gleaned from different web -sites/forums/blogs is the majority of comments are people think they are guilty so them getting an unbiased jury may prove to be difficult.

If they are found guilty would the cost to keep them jailed be offset as to the costing to keep an ongoing investigation going ?

Does anyone see an outcome where a unknown suspect comes out off the woodwork (because of the latest Crimewatch programme and gets charged and so exonerates the McCanns ?

I still personally feel the McCanns are innocent despite some compelling arguments that have been suggested :

I still don't get why they begged Scotland Yard to investigate again if they were guilty. And if they are guilty surly all the "Tapas seven" must be involved in some way.
No one but a psychopath could do such a barbaric act then calmly have dinner with friends. From what I have seen there is no evidence of one of them being Psycho never mind both of them.

I don't know if they had owt to do with it or not but surely they should be charged with child neglect for leaving them alone in the first place?

This is a open letter they sent in 2011....

    Dear Prime Minister,

As a devoted father and family man, you know the importance of children. Our beloved eldest child, Madeleine, was abducted from Praia da Luz, Portugal, four years ago. Since then, we have devoted all our energies to ensuring her safe return.

Today we are asking you - and the British and Portuguese governments - to help find Madeleine and bring her back to her loving family.

We live in hope that Madeleine will be found alive and returned to us. One call might be all that is needed to lead to Madeleine and her abductor.

To this end, we are seeking a joint INDEPENDENT, TRANSPARENT and COMPREHENSIVE review of ALL information held in relation to Madeleine's disappearance. Thus far, there has been NO formal review of the material held by the police authorities - which is routine practice in most major unsolved crimes.

It is not right that a young vulnerable British citizen has essentially been given up on. This remains an unsolved case of a missing child. Children are our most precious gift.

Please don't give up on Madeleine.

I really don't know...I am guessing one way to deflect anything from yourself, is to get the masses to look for someone else, something they have done very well. Remember Ian Huntley, going on TV appealing for help in the search for those kids in Soham..to me this is similar, but on a bigger scale. I keep coming back to my gut feeling that all is not right with these two..especially him.

If they were involved in her disappearance then the police will probably know! Body language/lying experts can apparently tell in an instant whether people under suspicion have something to hide!

Harold Shipman, Britain's most prolific serial killer, gave 'happy go lucky' TV interviews where he looked like everyone's grandad.

He'd slaughtered old women on an industrial scale.

Jimmy Saville kept up his 'I'm daft me' pretence for decades and actually got away with his hundreds of crimes.

This situation, with the McCanns, is stranger than fiction.

The police claims that a burglar may have been disturbed by the girl who then murdered her and carried the body through the streets is absolutely crazy.

Why would 'elite Scotland Yard detectives' issue such an obviously ludicrous statement?

Why do they produce a 'new star witness' who said, under caution, that he was up to 80% sure the man he saw was Gerry McCann.

I can't get my head round any of it tbh.

They did the same thing with the Yorkshire idiots when they claimed their daughter had vanished but was hiding in the airing cupboard.

I have to agree with this.
If it had been you or I we would have been hauled before the authorities.
We have a law about leaving kids under 14 alone, I'm certain.
Either way a very emotive topic and one which I feel we will never see a satisfactory outcome to.

If someone dressed like a chav approached their social worker for advice about leaving their kids asleep at home while they went down the Bingo Hall "only alang the road" and "we'll come and check on the bairns every hour or so" then I suspect I know what the answer would be and what would happen next.

Replace the chavs with doctors, the bingo hall with a Tapas bar and posher clothes and a plummier accent and what is actually different? Why have social services not intervened to protect the other children?

I doubt the Prime Minister would demand the allocation of 30 'elite Scotland Yard detectives' and spend million of pounds if things went wrang.

Facebook page with lots of conjecture, opinions, statements, most of it portraying the McCanns as 'guilty'- lots of accusations, covers different links, thoughts from Portugal, blogs, lots of controversy giving ideas and speculations that haven't been covered by this thread etc

    https://www.facebook.com/groups/HiDeHoCONTROVERSYofMadeleineMcCann/

general consensus on the social media is the crimewatch program was made to give the McCanns 'enough rope to hang themselves'

I'm taking my stance from being 'not guilty' to 'not sure anymore'

Why would it need Crimewatch for the McCanns to hang themselves? If there was any evidence they would been behind bars without TV help.
They are innocent of Murder or accidental killing...Very guilty of being pompous Twats though, which is why most on Twatter want them to be guilty.
