quotes from Alan.... this is the kind of stuff Poyet will nail to the dressing room wall surely.

http://prosoccertalk.nbcsports.com/...ack-talks-gus-poyet-ahead-of-tyne-wear-derby/

Not sure what’s gotten into Alan Pardew lately but the man has been positively enfuego the last few days.

On Sunday he discussed how his boss, Newcastle owner Mike Ashley, doesn’t understand football: “He loves football but he sometimes can’t understand how it works and it confuses and upsets him, and when he is upset, he does things that aren’t brilliant for the football club.”

More: Pardew calls Newcastle owner ‘confused’

Yikes.

But then earlier today the Magpies manager was at it again, telling new Sunderland boss Gus Poyet that he’s not experienced enough to cope with the Tyne-Wear derby.

“Gus will find it difficult there,” said Pardew. “The side that he’s managing need a bit of maintenance. They need their confidence building up.” The Englishman continued, “that first derby will be a shock to him. He might think he’s ready for it but it will be a shock.”

Bold words for a man whose side got spanked 3-0 at home in the same fixture last spring. That match, marked by Paolo Di Canio‘s memorable display of suited knee slides and chest pounds, was the cherry on top of an embarrassing season for Pardew’s side.

Ironically enough, that was only Di Canio’s second match on Wearside after taking over for a squad that also lacked plenty of confidence and needed some maintenance.

Which makes Pardew’s decision to light a fire under Poyet all the more interesting. The derby, set to take place at the Stadium of Light on October 27th, will be Poyet’s second match in charge of the Black Cats following this weekend’s trip to Swansea City.

So what’s Pardew’s deal?

Tough to say. Pardew isn’t out to get Poyet (he insists he’s a fan of the Uruguayan), but at the same time the Newcastle manager is definitely stirring the up the derby pot, which you have to love. Either way, it’s Game On!

Last season Magpies defender Steven Taylor made headlines when he insisted that not a single Sunderland player would be able to get in the Newcastle team. It’s a soundbite Pardew hasn’t forgotten.

“The press are looking for an angle, a quote,” he said. “Last year Steven made a silly quote and that got really brought out into the open, and made into a massive story. It’s that sort of thing: you wake up in the morning and look at your phone and think ‘Oh god, here we go – someone’s make a rick’ and it makes it even more pressurized.”

Time to check your cell, Alan.

Should get fairly reasonable odds on that LE.
Do you have much of a flutter on the Toon?

Usually go for 3-1 win every time but think this will be close.
Sunderland players will be up for game but think we just have the edge.

Nice one Albert, throw in a bit of cut & paste you nicked off the Sunderland board, from yesterday, to make it look like you really want to talk about football after all <laugh>

Pardew eh?

"“Last year Steven made a silly quote and that got really brought out into the open."

Yes, it was 'brought out into the open' when he made those comments to the media Alan <doh>

On our part I hope we take the result (regardless if positive or negative) in better grace than we did last time. Of course it is now blown out of all proportion with allegedly thousands (<laugh>) involved in a huge riot. 106 or whatever it was arrests out of 52,000 in the ground, plus the many thousands in the bars around the city is not great but hardly a thousands strong riot. I suppose you have to include the innocent bystanders just for the craic. Only 8 inside the actual stadium is not the picture that has subsequently been painted though is it. Still 106 (including mackems) too many of course.

The horse puncher did no favours though did he? So lets leave the animals alone and police alone.

Lets hope the mackems behave themselves too though. No running on the pitch assaulting goalkeepers or taking flares/smoke grenades into the ground. At least they can't assault the dogs at the metro station like they did after the Hearts game eh. Oh yes, there is more than one team in the North East with animal issues <whistle>. I'm sure we'll get the "we was framed guv" gang on to plead conspiracy.

I don't get the whole flare thing to be honest. SAFC aside, it seems like most visiting fans seem to bring a flare or two this season (we've even taken flares away ourselves).
I don't know what's worse... the stewards for not properly searching the fans or the fans for risking police action by waving 'look at me' flare in front of the cameras.
Whatever the cause, the best course of action surely is to put in place really big penalties for anyone found guilty of posessing a flare.
After all it can do some damage to people if mishandled.

For me it's about Pardew looking for a reaction from the last Derby from our lot... and how Poyet approaches the game tactically.

Both clubs have hooligans and people who'd like to be hooligans but can't commit ;)

I doubt the Newcastle supporters will misbehave at Sunderland. The small allocation means that it's 99% season ticket holders etc, who won't risk losing their season ticket or whatever.

Also, the protection the police give you means you barely glimpse the streets before you're in the ground.

I've just got my tickets so I can get properly excited, just need to get some flights now!

I hear stories from some of our older supporters about days gone by when both sets of fans would mingle around the bars near the ground before a game but sadly haven't seen evidence of this in my lifetime.
The only bar based interaction these days will be in outlying 50/50 places like my gaff, Consett and the like.
Our local is run by a Mackem and the split is about 65/35 in favour of Toon fans.
He's a happy chappy win or lose as the bar is rammed and he does a weeks takings in a day.
If SAFC win though, he has a standing agreement to neck a full Yard of ale in one go (we have to pay for the beer).
It's that kind of atmostphere there should be in the city centres but alas that is not normally the case.

I'm 58 and have never seen any 'happy mingling' to be honest.

In my opinion things have gotten worse over the last 10 years.

I was in the Black Bull, at the back of the away end, for the 3-0 and it was a bit tense to say the least. Me and the lads were in one corner and obviously not welcome.
The only light relief was when someone had a heart attack and an ambulance came to cart him off <doh>

I'm from Leadgate but moved to the East Midlands when I was about 8 for the pits .......... they started you young in those days <laugh>

The pit villages, like Clipstone, are 50/50 split and the pubs are segregated,

Hopefully it'll all go off on the pitch only. I don't want that fire taken out of the derby. There will always be idiots, just the way of the world. I won't be there, but will be propping up a bar somewhere in Northumberland.

My first taste of a derby was at Roker in 1969. The violence was much worse in those days and didn't fade much until the 90's. Horrendous at times. I suppose if you wanted bother now, you could find it, but most of the run of the mill fans are safe enough. You'll always get a few hundred tossers hell bent on trouble. Usually these are filled with lager and false bravado who couldn't throw a punch to save their lives.

If I recall, that was the match where the police confiscated a holdall full of weapons that the Sunderland lads had thrown into the ground.

I was there with some older lads who ****ing terrified me.

All I wanted to do was get into the ground but they kept saying, "We'll hang back, round the Roker End, after kick off for stragglers from Newcastle." <doh>
