The whole 'press thing' of building up players is starting to get right on my bits.

Andros Townsend has played ONE Englad game and did well and also a dozen or so PL games and all of a sudden he's our saviour.

The press should back off IMHO and let the lad develop outside of the public glare.

Don't get me wrong, I hope the lad does well... but we have a habit if bigging up players for them to go on and struggle with the pressure.

I remember some of the press saying Jenas was nailed on to be the heartbeat of England one day.

Am I alone in having a moan about this?

Nope, agree. Only solution? Ignore mainstream press. Utterly and completely.

    Agree with the sentiment.

Developing point further tho' I also get extremely irritated by the Press, usually the Southern Press, building up players as world beaters when they clearly they are not. The so called "golden generation" being a point in question. For all his faults I have to agree with Joey B as to his views on that lot.

As an example Gerrard and Lampard are great club players but neither are or ever were world class players a la Messi, Ronaldo etc. but if you listened to the press both are world class.

His performance was superb and one that excites me however the way the press go on he is a game away from being voted a better player then Beckham
Leaving him to end up being a scape goat.
He will prob end up another Bentley.

IMO after tonight we say thanks but no thanks to the old guard and start with the kids I would rather lose
With kids giving us a better chance in the future then losing with terry
    Lampard and bloody Milner

Worse is that they will almost vilify someone like ravel morrison for blowing his chances, last chance saloon etc etc..then two months later he's the future. I'm speaking more of the tabloids obviously but this change of tact as and when it suits them is abhorrent.

And yeah the townsend situation is being blown out of all proportions, as usual.

I suspect most reasonable fans agree ACS. Young players fluctuate more in their performances than older players and wingers aren't exactly generally renowned for consistency anyway. All just a way of filling up column inches.

No doubt the press get carried away. Have to say though, for me Gerrard is world class. He has got everything and while he has not always set the world alight for England, he has performed at the top level of domestic/European level when it matters. You have to consider Ronaldo and Messi haven't always been amazing at national level either. Certainly their records don't match their club level.

Its all subjective on what you class as world class really. I don't think you have to be at Ronaldo or Messi level, they are the best players. Gerrard to me was and maybe still is a world class central midfielder. Beckham was world class. Lampard maybe just below.

Our problem is we don't produce enough! We call a golden generation 3 or 4. Spain have 11 and more.

I really like Townsend. I think he is one of the new generation of players we are producing with Wilshere, Barkley who have genuine potential and technique. There is a long way to go for the lad though and they all need keep on the same development path if they want to world class. We won't produce enough for 2014 but maybe 2018/22 we can look forward to a better band of players rather than clambering all over two or three. If we produce enough maybe the press will find it more difficult to pick out the next "Gazza"

Listening to the Spurs fans after the West Ham defeat you'd think Townsend was the worst player to ever set foot in White Hart Lane.

Did ok for his England debut and puts the miles in running the pitch, but we've had the same hype over Walcott and Chamberlain.

Decent players but none have set my world on fire. I'd be a damn sight more impressed if these performances were away from home against truly decent international teams.

We've been here sooooo many times with England it's just boring now!

The thing I like about Chamberlain and Townsend compared to Walcott is their technical level. Much higher. I like the idea of Wilshere, Chamberlain, Sturridge, Barkley, Townsend taking us forward. The problem is we lack a top quality holder like a Javi Martinez to let them play. We are no great shakes and those mentioned are not enough or world beaters, but at least they play with a style and technique that doesn't make us look like dinosaurs.

I do think our 'new' crop of players are showing a good level of international ability mind.

The thing that annoys me about the press is this whole "next" thing.

Never a day goes by without some paper describing some up and coming talent as "the next Messi" or "the new Iniesta". **** sake, can they not have their own mark on the game

So does this mean we don't need to call up Adnan Januzaj?

He'll be happy this evening then...

To me, a world class player stands out on the world stage at major competitions. The vast majority of the squad we have and can put forward to world cup certainly are not world class. We've beaten Poland and Montenegro, not a team that'll trouble the bookmakers at a big event, except in how many zeros they'd have to add to the end of the /1 odds if they ever got there.

Wayne Rooney is the most over-hyped player of this generation. Sorry, but tonight he was pretty cack except his goal. He's not a great striker, his record tells you that. He's had one good season in the PL, and several poor ones. What his record also tells you, is he can score against the **** teams we play in qualifying, and not the big ones when we get to a finals. His passing and general play is terrible these days, but one hollywood ball out wide for no reason and the journalists go wild.

All thoughts comparing him to gazza are just ridiculous.
